شهدت جزيرة ستاتن في مدينة نيويورك الأمريكية حريقاً أعقبه انفجاران متتاليان داخل أحد المباني، ما أسفر عن وفاة شخص وإصابة 36 آخرين، بينهم عدد من رجال الإطفاء، بحسب ما نقلته وكالة «أسوشيتد برس» عن مسؤولين محليين.
وأوضح المسؤولون أن الضحية مدني كان داخل المبنى وقت وقوع الانفجار، فيما أصيب عدد كبير من عناصر الإطفاء خلال عمليات الاستجابة والإنقاذ.
وأشار مسؤولو الدفاع المدني إلى أن أحد رجال الإطفاء ومسؤولاً ميدانياً كانا داخل المبنى لحظة الانفجار الثاني، ما أدى إلى تعرضهما لإصابات خطيرة نتيجة قوة الانفجار.
وأكد رئيس قسم الإطفاء أن فرق الطوارئ وصلت إلى الموقع بعد دقائق من اندلاع الحريق، إلا أن انفجاراً وقع عقب وصولهم مباشرة، متسبباً في إصابات بين رجال الإطفاء ومدنيين كانوا في محيط الحادث.
وأضاف أن خمسة من رجال الإطفاء والمسعفين كانوا يجرون عمليات بحث عن عمال محاصرين داخل المبنى وفوقه وبالقرب منه، قبل أن يهز الانفجار الثاني الموقع، ما أدى إلى ارتفاع عدد الإصابات.
ولا تزال السلطات الأمريكية تواصل التحقيق في ملابسات الحريق والانفجارين، بالتزامن مع استمرار فرق الإنقاذ في تأمين الموقع وحصر الأضرار الناجمة عن الحادث.

Officials clarified that the victim was a civilian who was inside the building at the time of the explosion, while a large number of firefighters were injured during the response and rescue operations.
Civil defense officials noted that one firefighter and a field officer were inside the building at the moment of the second explosion, which resulted in serious injuries due to the force of the blast.
The fire chief confirmed that emergency teams arrived at the site minutes after the fire broke out, but an explosion occurred immediately after their arrival, causing injuries among firefighters and civilians in the vicinity of the incident.
He added that five firefighters and paramedics were conducting searches for trapped workers inside, above, and near the building before the second explosion shook the site, leading to an increase in the number of injuries.
U.S. authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the fire and the two explosions, while rescue teams continue to secure the site and assess the damage caused by the incident.
