قلت للدكتور عبدالله الربيعة، المشرف العام على مركز الملك سلمان للإغاثة والأعمال الإنسانية، ذات يوم إنني أغبطك على وظيفتك، فقد اجتمع لك فيها أجرُ الدنيا والآخرة، ففرصة العمل في القطاع الإنساني لا تُقدَّر بثمن. والحقيقة أنني أغبط كل من يعمل في مجال الخدمات الإنسانية والخيرية، وهو ليس عملاً سهلاً كما يتصوّر البعض، بل يتطلّب صفاتٍ خاصة تجتمع فيها الرغبة والكفاءة!
كنت وما زلت أنظر بإعجاب شديد إلى الجَلَد الذي يتمتع به العاملون في القطاع الخيري والعمل الإنساني؛ فهم يسخرون أوقاتهم ويبذلون جهوداً بدنية ونفسية في مجالٍ يستنزف الطاقة الجسدية والذهنية. فرغم اللذّة الخاصة للعطاء وإسعاد الآخرين، إلا أن العيش في دائرة المعاناة الإنسانية للمحتاجين والمنكوبين يثقل كاهل الجسد والعقل والقلب، ويترك ندوباً نفسية عميقة ناتجة عن الإحساس بألم معاناة الآخرين وحاجاتهم، التي قد تكون بسيطة عند شرائح عديدة من المجتمع، لكنها ماسّة عند المحتاجين العاجزين عن مواجهة ظروف الحياة وتحمل أعبائها!
وعندما تطوّعت ابنتاي في مقتبل حياتهما للعمل الخيري في إحدى الدول الأفريقية، عادتا بغير الوجه الذي ذهبتا به؛ فقد بدتا لي أكثر وعياً ونضجاً بمعاني الإنسانية وروح المشاركة. وعندما زرت مخيم الزعتري للاطلاع على جهود إغاثة اللاجئين السوريين، شعرت بمعنى آخر للحياة وقيمة ما تقدمه لنا من ملذات، إذ تتفاوت قيمتها عند الناس بقدر احتياجهم لها وقدرتهم على توفيرها. فما بدا لي رخيصاً وسهلاً في عالمي كان ثميناً وصعباً في عالم أكثر احتياجاً وأقل قدرة على مواجهة متطلبات الحياة، لذلك أصبحت اليوم أكثر قيمة عندي، حتى وإن كانت أرخص في ثمنها!
لن أنسى ما حييت مطالب بعض سكان المخيم التي لم تتجاوز الحصول على لوح طاقة شمسية لتشغيل سخّان ماء أو تلفاز صغير، في الوقت الذي تبدو فيه هذه الحاجيات من أسهل عناصر الحياة عند غالبية البشر. ومن تتاح له فرصة العمل في ميدان العمل الإنساني أو الاطلاع عليه عن كثب، يصبح أكثر إدراكاً لقيمة نعم الحياة التي ينعم الله بها علينا!
باختصار.. أعظم عمل في الحياة هي خدمة الإنسانية، وألذ شعور بالسعادة هو شعور العطاء!
I told Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the General Supervisor of the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Works, one day that I envy him for his job, as it combines the rewards of this world and the Hereafter. The opportunity to work in the humanitarian sector is priceless. In fact, I envy everyone who works in the field of humanitarian and charitable services, which is not an easy job as some might think; it requires special qualities that combine desire and competence!
I have always admired the resilience of those working in the charitable and humanitarian sector; they dedicate their time and exert physical and mental efforts in a field that drains both physical and mental energy. Despite the unique pleasure of giving and bringing happiness to others, living within the circle of human suffering of the needy and the afflicted weighs heavily on the body, mind, and heart, leaving deep psychological scars resulting from the feeling of the pain of others’ suffering and needs, which may seem simple to many segments of society but are critical for those in need who are unable to cope with life’s circumstances and bear its burdens!
When my daughters volunteered in their early lives for charitable work in one of the African countries, they returned with a different perspective than the one they left with; they seemed more aware and mature regarding the meanings of humanity and the spirit of participation. When I visited the Zaatari camp to learn about the efforts to aid Syrian refugees, I felt a different meaning of life and the value of what it offers us in terms of pleasures, as its value varies among people according to their need for it and their ability to provide it. What seemed cheap and easy in my world was precious and difficult in a world that is more in need and less able to face the demands of life, which is why it has become more valuable to me today, even if it is cheaper in price!
I will never forget the requests of some camp residents, which did not exceed the need for a solar panel to operate a water heater or a small television, at a time when these necessities seem to be among the easiest elements of life for the majority of people. Those who have the opportunity to work in the field of humanitarian work or to observe it closely become more aware of the value of the blessings of life that God bestows upon us!
In short.. the greatest work in life is serving humanity, and the sweetest feeling of happiness is the feeling of giving!
