أعلن وزير الخزانة الأمريكي السابق لاري سامرز قراره اعتزال التدريس في جامعة هارفارد مع نهاية العام الدراسي الحالي، وذلك في ظل استمرار تداعيات علاقته السابقة برجل الأعمال الراحل والمدان في قضايا جنسية جيفري إبستين.
وقال سامرز في بيان رسمي: «لقد اتخذت قراراً صعباً بالتقاعد من منصبي الأكاديمي في هارفارد مع نهاية هذا العام الدراسي».
ويأتي هذا القرار بعد موجة انتقادات واجهها سامرز منذ أن كشفت لجنة الرقابة في مجلس النواب الأمريكي عن وثائق تتضمن مراسلات شخصية مستمرة بينه وبين إبستين، ورغم نشر تلك الوثائق، لم تظهر أي أدلة تشير إلى ارتكاب سمرز مخالفات قانونية.
وكان سامرز، الذي شغل أيضاً منصب رئيس جامعة هارفارد سابقاً، قد أوقف أنشطته التدريسية في نوفمبر الماضي، كما حصل على إجازة من منصبه مديراً مشاركاً لمركز موسافار-رحماني للأعمال والحكومة في كلية هارفارد كينيدي، عقب إعلان الجامعة فتح مراجعة رسمية بشأن الأسماء الواردة في ملفات إبستين التي أفرجت عنها الحكومة أخيرا.
وأكد المتحدث باسم الجامعة، جيسون نيوتن، أن عميد كلية هارفارد كينيدي، جيريمي واينستين، قبل استقالة سامرز من منصبه القيادي في المركز، مشيراً إلى أنه سيظل في إجازة حتى تقاعده النهائي من جميع مناصبه الأكاديمية بنهاية العام الدراسي.
وفي سياق متصل، كان سامرز قد استقال أيضاً في نوفمبر الماضي من مجلس إدارة شركة OpenAI، المطورة لتقنية الذكاء الاصطناعي ChatGPT، وذلك بعد إعلان هارفارد بدء مراجعتها الداخلية.
ووصف سامرز في تصريحات سابقة علاقته بإبستين بأنها مصدر «خزي عميق» له، مشيراً إلى أنه يتحمل مسؤولية استمرار التواصل معه بعد إدانته عام 2008، وأكد عزمه الابتعاد عن الالتزامات العامة من أجل «إصلاح علاقاته مع الأشخاص الأقربين إليه».
Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers announced his decision to retire from teaching at Harvard University at the end of the current academic year, amid the ongoing repercussions of his previous relationship with the late businessman and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Summers said in an official statement: “I have made the difficult decision to retire from my academic position at Harvard at the end of this academic year.”
This decision comes after a wave of criticism Summers faced since the House Oversight Committee revealed documents containing ongoing personal correspondence between him and Epstein. Despite the release of those documents, no evidence has emerged indicating that Summers committed any legal violations.
Summers, who also previously served as President of Harvard University, had suspended his teaching activities last November and took a leave of absence from his position as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School, following the university’s announcement of an official review regarding the names mentioned in the Epstein files that were recently released by the government.
University spokesperson Jason Newton confirmed that the Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School, Jeremy Weinstein, accepted Summers’ resignation from his leadership position at the center, noting that he will remain on leave until his final retirement from all academic positions at the end of the academic year.
In a related context, Summers also resigned last November from the board of directors of OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT artificial intelligence technology, following Harvard’s announcement of its internal review.
Summers previously described his relationship with Epstein as a source of “deep shame” for him, indicating that he takes responsibility for continuing to communicate with him after his conviction in 2008, and affirmed his intention to step back from public commitments in order to “repair his relationships with those closest to him.”
