ألقت شرطة العاصمة البريطانية في لندن القبض أمس (الإثنين) على اللورد بيتر ماندلسون، السفير البريطاني السابق لدى الولايات المتحدة وأحد أبرز وجوه حزب العمال البريطاني، للاشتباه في ارتكابه جريمة «سوء سلوك في منصب عام».
مداهمة في كامدن
ووصل محققون إلى منزل ماندلسون في منطقة كامدن شمال لندن بمركبتين غير مميزتين، قبل اقتياده إلى مركز شرطة في العاصمة لإجراء مقابلة رسمية.
ونقلت وسائل إعلام بريطانية، بينها BBC، أنه لم يُكبل أثناء نقله، وظهر وهو يحمل زجاجة ماء، وفق لقطات بثتها قنوات محلية.
وأكدت شرطة العاصمة، في بيان، أن رجلاً يبلغ من العمر 72 عاماً أُلقي القبض عليه في عنوان بكامدن بشبهة «سوء سلوك في منصب عام»، دون ذكر اسمه، التزاماً بالسياسة المتبعة في مثل هذه القضايا.
خلفية القضية
يأتي الاعتقال ضمن تحقيق بدأته الشرطة مطلع فبراير 2026، عقب الكشف عن وثائق ومراسلات مرتبطة بالملفات القضائية التي أفرجت عنها أخيراً وزارة العدل الأمريكية، الخاصة بجيفري إبستين الذي توفي عام 2019.
وتشير الاتهامات إلى أن ماندلسون، خلال توليه منصب وزير الأعمال في حكومة غوردون براون بين 2008 و2009، ربما شارك معلومات حكومية حساسة أو معلومات ذات طابع سوقي مع إبستين، الذي سبق أن أُدين بجرائم جنسية تتعلق بقاصرين.
مسيرة سياسية مثيرة
وشغل ماندلسون مناصب رفيعة داخل حزب العمال، من بينها وزير التجارة والصناعة، قبل تعيينه سفيراً لبريطانيا في واشنطن حتى سبتمبر 2025، وأُقيل بعد ظهور تفاصيل عن استمرار تواصله مع إبستين عقب إدانته في 2008.
وسبق أن داهمت الشرطة منزليه في لندن وويلتشاير في وقت سابق من الشهر الجاري ضمن التحقيق ذاته، علماً بأن جريمة «سوء السلوك في منصب عام» تُعد من الجرائم الخطيرة في بريطانيا، وقد تصل عقوبتها إلى السجن المؤبد.

Raid in Camden
Investigators arrived at Mandelson’s home in the Camden area of North London in two unmarked vehicles before taking him to a police station in the capital for a formal interview.
British media outlets, including the BBC, reported that he was not handcuffed during his transport and was seen carrying a bottle of water, according to footage broadcast by local channels.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement that a 72-year-old man was arrested at an address in Camden on suspicion of “misconduct in public office,” without naming him, in accordance with the policy followed in such cases.
Background of the Case
The arrest comes as part of an investigation that the police began in early February 2026, following the disclosure of documents and correspondence related to the court files recently released by the U.S. Department of Justice concerning Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019.
The allegations suggest that Mandelson, during his tenure as Minister of Business in Gordon Brown’s government between 2008 and 2009, may have shared sensitive government information or market-sensitive information with Epstein, who had previously been convicted of sexual crimes involving minors.
Notable Political Career
Mandelson held high-ranking positions within the Labour Party, including Minister of Trade and Industry, before being appointed as the British ambassador in Washington until September 2025, and he was dismissed after details emerged about his continued communication with Epstein following his conviction in 2008.
The police had previously raided his homes in London and Wiltshire earlier this month as part of the same investigation, noting that the crime of “misconduct in public office” is considered a serious offense in Britain, with a potential penalty of life imprisonment.
