الإيماءات هي حركات جسدية غير لفظية تستخدم في التواصل البشري.
في طفولتي كنت أشاهد بدهشة كبيرة إشارات متواطأ عليها بين كبيرات السن، قلة قليلة منها تسلل للنساء الشابات والأطفال، فيما يخص الأطفال فلا أتذكر أن أحدنا كان يأخذ قسم وحلف طفل آخر على محمل الجد إن لم يرافق القسم بالله رسم علامة على العنق تشبه مرور سكين وهمية، أما حركات النساء فكثيرة لا أحصي أغلبها ولا أفهم دلالة بعضها.
أتذكّر إحداهن حين تنتهي من نميمتها وقبيل نهوضها من مجلسها تبلّل سبابتها وإبهامها بريقها ثم تنفضهما وكأنها تلفظ الكلمة الأخيرة المحرّمة، هي بذلك تبرئ ذمتها من حديثها فلم تعد مسؤولة عما قالت.
أما إن أرادت أن تستقبح فعلاً أو كلمة سواء بسبب الحرام الديني أو العيب الاجتماعي فهي ستتبع شهقتها برسم خط طولي وهمي بسبابتها، بدءاً من جفن عينها الأسفل بطول الخد. وهذه الحركة نفسها تعبّر عن استحسانها لشخص أو شيء جميل.
وتضع المرأة سبابتها معقوفة حول أرنبة أنفها على سبيل التأمل أو الاستغراب، ويرافق هذه الحركة جملة لطيفة هي: يا فكرتي!
أما إن وقعت مصيبة أو قيل كلام خطير فالأمر يستأهل استخدام كلتا اليدين لتطويق الرأس وربما الضرب عليه مراراً.
أما تقبيل الصغار فيشغل أكثر من إيماءة، أحدها مثلاً: قرص الطفل قرصة خفيفة وتقبيل الأصابع في موضع القرصة.
هذه الإشارات الظريفة تضفي نوعاً من الجاذبية للمتحدثة، وتضفي عليها جمالاً، خاصة لو صبغتها بأداء يخصها ويعبّر عن ذاتيتها. وغالباً في عالم الرجال إيماءات لم أتبيّن أغلبها.
جميع ما سبق وصفه ينتمي لنساء من كبيرات السن في قبيلة عتيبة، وأظن أنها تشمل طيفاً واسعاً من قبائل المملكة، وإن وجدت فروق طفيفة.
هذه الإيماءات وغيرها الكثير يذكرني بحقيقة أن اللغة البدائية للبشر كانت أغلبها إشارات وإيماءات إن لم يكن جميعها.
صحيح أني لم أعد أرى إحداهن تستعمل هذه الإيماءات اللطيفة، ربما لأن الناس لم يصبحوا يتحدثون مع بعضهم بحضور جسدي كامل في زمن التواصل التكنولوجي والانشغال بالجوال. لم تعد هناك أحاديث عميقة وطويلة ولا مستمعون غير نافذي الصبر من المعتادين على الفديوهات القصيرة والملخصات.
هذا النوع من التواصل انقرض تقريباً.
لكني ألاحظ نشوء لغة إيماءات عالمية يتفق فيها الرجال والنساء مثل رسم القلب بالسبابة والإبهام، تساعد تطبيقات التواصل الاجتماعية والإيموجي في نشوئها وسرعة انتشارها، بالنسبة لدخول الرجال عالم الإيماءات فأنا لا أستغربه؛ لأنه مع التقدّم البشري يبدو وكأن الحضارة تتأنث، الرجال دخلوا عالم الأناقة والأثاث والطبخ وأصبحوا ينافسون المرأة في مجالات كانت حصراً للنساء، لكن الآن قد يتفوقون فيها بسهولة، وأنا لا أقول ذلك على سبيل الانتقاد بل أصف ما يحدث على نحو دقيق.
لكني لا أفهم حاجة الإنسان المعاصر سواء الرجال أو النساء في ظل غنى قواميس المشاعر العالمية وتعدّد مستوياتها وأطيافها، غنى غير مسبوق تاريخياً. لكن مع ذلك لا يزال الإنسان يحتاج للتعبير الإيمائي عبر الجسد.
ربما لأن الجسد أقدم من اللغة وأصدق منها.
Gestures are non-verbal physical movements used in human communication.
In my childhood, I watched with great amazement the signals agreed upon among the elderly women, with very few of them sneaking into the young women and children. As for the children, I don’t remember any of us taking an oath or swearing by another child seriously unless the oath was accompanied by a gesture resembling the passing of an imaginary knife across the neck. As for the women’s movements, there are many that I cannot count, and I do not understand the meaning of some of them.
I remember one of them, when she finished her gossip and just before getting up from her seat, she would moisten her index finger and thumb with her saliva and then flick them as if she were uttering the last forbidden word. In doing so, she absolves herself from her talk and is no longer responsible for what she said.
If she wanted to express disgust at an action or a word, whether due to religious taboo or social shame, she would follow her gasp with an imaginary long line drawn with her index finger, starting from her lower eyelid down along her cheek. This same movement also expresses her approval of a person or something beautiful.
A woman places her curved index finger around the tip of her nose as a form of contemplation or surprise, accompanied by a lovely phrase: “Oh, my thought!”
If a disaster occurs or something serious is said, it warrants the use of both hands to encircle the head and perhaps strike it repeatedly.
As for kissing the little ones, it involves more than one gesture; one of them, for example, is giving the child a light pinch and kissing the fingers at the site of the pinch.
These charming signals add a kind of allure to the speaker and enhance her beauty, especially if she colors them with a performance that is uniquely hers and expresses her individuality. Often, in the world of men, there are gestures that I have not discerned most of.
All of the above descriptions belong to elderly women from the Otaibah tribe, and I believe it encompasses a wide spectrum of tribes in the Kingdom, although there are slight differences.
These gestures and many others remind me of the fact that the primitive language of humans was mostly gestures and signals, if not entirely so.
It is true that I no longer see any of them using these lovely gestures, perhaps because people no longer communicate with each other in full physical presence in an age of technological communication and distraction by mobile phones. There are no longer deep and lengthy conversations, nor listeners who are not impatient, accustomed to short videos and summaries.
This type of communication has almost become extinct.
However, I notice the emergence of a universal language of gestures agreed upon by both men and women, such as drawing a heart with the index finger and thumb, aided by social communication applications and emojis in its emergence and rapid spread. As for men entering the world of gestures, I am not surprised; because with human advancement, it seems as if civilization is becoming more feminine. Men have entered the world of elegance, furniture, and cooking, and they now compete with women in fields that were exclusively for women, but now they may easily excel in them, and I do not say this as a criticism but rather describe what is happening accurately.
However, I do not understand the contemporary human’s need, whether men or women, in light of the richness of global emotional vocabularies and the multiplicity of their levels and spectra, an unprecedented historical richness. Yet, still, humans need to express themselves through gestures via the body.
Perhaps because the body is older than language and more truthful than it.
