لا أستحضر هنا اسمَ ناقدٍ عابرٍ في سجل الثقافة السعودية، بل استدعي حالة ثقافية فريدة لعقلٍ شجاعٍ، وأديب نبيل ورجل رفيع في إنسانيته وعطائه، أدرك مبكراً أن الكلمة التزام، وأن النقد ممارسة وعيٍ لا زينة خطاب أو سجالات في صوالين الثقافة وأمسياتها. أديب أسهم في تشكيل الحس الأدبي الحديث، وخاض معركة التجديد وصراعات الحداثة بثبات من يرى في السؤال الصعب شرطاً للتقدّم، وفي الرد على المتشنجين لباقة أدبية تستلهما أجيال لتصنع مشهداً ثقافيّاً مختلفاً.
انحاز السريحي إلى الحداثة باعتبارها أفقاً معرفياً منضبطاً، وقرأ التراث بوعيٍ تاريخي، وتعمّق في الحداثة بصرامة منهجية لواقع لا بد أن يكون (فكان) شاهداً على ازدهارها، لم يأسره تيار، ولم يحتجزه انتماء ولم تحكمه أيديولوجيات؛ لذلك جاء حضوره في سجالات الثمانينات والتسعينات حاسماً وواضحاً، فواجه خطاب التشدد الذي خلط بين الاختلاف والاتهام، وتحمّل محاولات التشكيك في نزاهته الأكاديمية، كما روى بنفسه، ومع ذلك صان الخلاف من الانزلاق إلى الخصومة، وأبقى الحوار في دائرة الحجة، آمن بأن الثقافة تبنى بالبرهان، لا بالتشهير والتعامل بالمثل.
لم يكتب من برجٍ معزول، بل عاش النص وعايش أصحابه على حصير الأدب البسيط الشيق، ففي حديثه لا يقدّم إجابات جاهزة، بل يقود مستمعه وقارئه إلى منطقة المعنى، يفتح طبقات الدلالة ويسافر بك إلى آفاق لذيذة من جمال المفردات بنكهة جاذبة وإلقاء باذخ في رصانته ونبرته ومخارج حروفه الفريدة، فيعيد للكلمة طاقتها وبهاءها وكأنك تسمعها للمرة الأولى. جمع في حضوره بين ثقة العارف واتزان الحكيم، وأشرك محاوره في توليد الفكرة، ولم يفرضها عليه، وكتب بلغة تجمع الدقة والصفاء. التزم المنهج، ولم يتخلَّ عن حساسيته الجمالية وجعل من النص النقدي عملاً نابضاً بالحياة؛ لأنه يرى في العمل الأدبي كائناً يُفهم قبل أن يُحاكم، ويُقرأ قبل أن يُصنَّف.
برحيل الناقد والأديب الكبير سعيد السريحي -أبي إقبال- خسر المشهد الثقافي صوتاً عقلانياً رفيعاً وفريداً، وحضوراً لا يتكرر، وفراغاً لا يملؤه غيره، لكن بقي أثره الطيب ليترك درساً ملهما: النقد شجاعة فكر، والاختلاف قيمة، والكلمة الصادقة فعل بناء، والنبل حين يتجسّد يكون على هيئة (السريحي).
I am not recalling here the name of a fleeting critic in the record of Saudi culture, but rather invoking a unique cultural figure of a brave mind, a noble writer, and a distinguished man in his humanity and generosity. He recognized early on that words are a commitment, and that criticism is a practice of awareness, not mere embellishment of discourse or debates in the salons of culture and their evenings. A writer who contributed to shaping modern literary sensibility, he fought the battle of renewal and the struggles of modernity with the steadfastness of one who sees in difficult questions a prerequisite for progress, and in responding to the agitated, a literary politeness that inspires generations to create a different cultural scene.
Al-Suhaili leaned towards modernity as a disciplined cognitive horizon, read heritage with historical awareness, and delved into modernity with methodological rigor for a reality that must (and did) witness its flourishing. He was not captivated by any current, nor confined by any affiliation, nor governed by ideologies; thus, his presence in the debates of the 1980s and 1990s was decisive and clear. He confronted the discourse of extremism that conflated difference with accusation, endured attempts to cast doubt on his academic integrity, as he recounted himself, yet he preserved disagreement from slipping into enmity, keeping dialogue within the realm of argument. He believed that culture is built on evidence, not on defamation and retaliation.
He did not write from an isolated tower but lived the text and engaged with its authors on the simple, captivating mat of literature. In his discourse, he does not offer ready-made answers but leads his listener and reader to the realm of meaning, opening layers of significance and taking you on a journey to delightful horizons of the beauty of vocabulary, with an attractive flavor and a lavish delivery in its sobriety, tone, and unique articulation. He restored to words their energy and splendor, as if you were hearing them for the first time. In his presence, he combined the confidence of the knowledgeable with the balance of the wise, involving his interlocutor in generating ideas rather than imposing them, and wrote in a language that combines precision and clarity. He adhered to methodology but did not abandon his aesthetic sensitivity, making critical writing a vibrant work of life; for he sees in literary work a being that must be understood before it is judged, and read before it is classified.
With the passing of the great critic and writer Saeed Al-Suhaili – Abu Iqbal – the cultural scene lost a high and unique rational voice, an irreplaceable presence, and a void that can only be filled by him. Yet, his good influence remains, leaving an inspiring lesson: criticism is the courage of thought, difference is a value, sincere words are a constructive act, and nobility, when embodied, takes the form of (Al-Suhaili).
