توفي رجل الأعمال البريطاني كوينتين غريفيثس، الشريك المؤسس لمتجر الأزياء الإلكتروني ASOS، بعد سقوطه من مبنى سكني في مدينة باتايا الساحلية بتايلند.
سقوط من شرفة مبنى
وأفادت الشرطة التايلندية بأن غريفيثس، البالغ من العمر 58 عامًا، سقط من الطابق السابع عشر في بناية سكنية مكوّنة من 18 طابقًا. ووفقًا للتحقيقات الأولية، ترجّح السلطات فرضية الانتحار، مؤكدة عدم وجود مؤشرات على شبهة جنائية، كما أظهرت تسجيلات كاميرات المراقبة عدم دخول أي شخص إلى شقته، حيث كان يعيش بمفرده. كما تم نقل الجثمان لإجراء تشريح طبي لتحديد ملابسات الوفاة بشكل نهائي.
خلافات زوجية
ونقلت الشرطة عن صديق تايلندي لغريفيثس قوله إنه كان يعاني قلقًا بشأن دعاوى قضائية رفعتها زوجته السابقة، وهي مواطنة تايلندية. وأضافت أن مستندات تتعلق بهذه القضايا عُثر عليها داخل شقته.
مسيرة مهنية بارزة
حمل غريفيثس جواز سفر بريطانيًا، وشارك في تأسيس شركة ASOS في لندن عام 2000، إلى جانب نيك روبرتسون (حفيد حفيد مؤسس شركة الأزياء الرجالية أوستن ريد)، وأُطلقت الشركة في بدايتها تحت اسم «As Seen on Screen» قبل أن تعتمد اختصار «ASOS» رسميًا عام 2002.
وأُدرجت الشركة في سوق الاستثمار البديل بلندن عام 2001، قبل أن تتحول إلى واحدة من أكبر شركات بيع الأزياء عبر الإنترنت في العالم، وارتدت تصاميمها شخصيات بارزة مثل ريهانا وميشيل أوباما.
وغادر غريفيثس الشركة عام 2005، لكنه ظل مساهمًا رئيسيًا فيها لنحو عقد إضافي.
مشاريع لاحقة
وبعد مغادرته ASOS، انخرط غريفيثس في عدد من المشاريع الجديدة، من بينها المشاركة في تأسيس متجر الأثاث الإلكتروني Achica، ومتجر الأزياء الموسيقية EBTM، إضافة إلى موقع متخصص في الملابس الأخلاقية، إلا أن بعض هذه المشاريع واجهت صعوبات ودخلت في إجراءات إفلاس.
من جهته، أكد مكتب الخارجية البريطاني أنه يقدم الدعم لأسرة مواطن بريطاني توفي في تايلند، مشيرًا إلى تواصله مع السلطات المحلية لمتابعة القضية.
ويُعد غريفيثس من رواد التجارة الإلكترونية في بريطانيا، وأسهم في بناء واحدة من أبرز منصات الموضة الرقمية عالميًا، قبل أن تنتهي مسيرته بوفاة مأساوية في ظروف لا تزال قيد الاستكمال من قبل السلطات المختصة.
British businessman Quentin Griffiths, co-founder of the online fashion store ASOS, has died after falling from a residential building in the coastal city of Pattaya, Thailand.
Fall from a Balcony
Thai police reported that Griffiths, who was 58 years old, fell from the seventeenth floor of an 18-story residential building. According to preliminary investigations, authorities are leaning towards the suicide hypothesis, confirming that there are no indications of criminal suspicion. Surveillance camera footage showed that no one entered his apartment, where he lived alone. The body has also been transferred for a medical autopsy to determine the circumstances of the death definitively.
Marital Disputes
The police quoted a Thai friend of Griffiths as saying that he was suffering from anxiety over lawsuits filed by his ex-wife, who is a Thai citizen. They added that documents related to these cases were found inside his apartment.
Distinguished Career
Griffiths held a British passport and co-founded ASOS in London in 2000, alongside Nick Robertson (the grandson of the founder of the menswear company Austin Reed). The company was initially launched under the name “As Seen on Screen” before officially adopting the abbreviation “ASOS” in 2002.
The company was listed on the Alternative Investment Market in London in 2001, before becoming one of the largest online fashion retailers in the world, with its designs worn by prominent figures such as Rihanna and Michelle Obama.
Griffiths left the company in 2005 but remained a major shareholder for nearly another decade.
Subsequent Ventures
After leaving ASOS, Griffiths engaged in several new projects, including co-founding the online furniture store Achica, the music fashion store EBTM, and a website specializing in ethical clothing, although some of these ventures faced difficulties and entered bankruptcy proceedings.
For its part, the British Foreign Office confirmed that it is providing support to the family of a British citizen who died in Thailand, noting that it is in contact with local authorities to follow up on the case.
Griffiths is considered a pioneer of e-commerce in the UK and contributed to building one of the most prominent digital fashion platforms globally, before his career ended with a tragic death under circumstances that are still being investigated by the relevant authorities.
