سيرة امرأة علمية طُمست من كتب التاريخ مريم، أخت النبي موسى وهارون عليهما السلام، لم تكن مجرد أخت نبيّ، بل كانت عقلًا علميًا مبدعًا. منذ اللحظة الأولى التي أنقذت فيها أخاها الرضيع من الغرق في النيل، بدأت رحلتها مع الاختراع. طلَتْ الصندوق بالقار قبل أن تلقيه أمها في اليم، فحفظته من الماء ومن الغرق. ومن ذلك اليوم، صارت مريم تُفكر وتبتكر.
يقال إنها هي أول من فكرت في صناعة قارورة تحفظ الحرارة والبرودة، أي ما نسميه اليوم «الترمس». صنعت زجاجة داخل زجاجة أخرى، ووضعت بينهما طبقة من القش لتعزل الحرارة. اختراع بسيط في ظاهره، عبقري في تأثيره. ولم تقف عند هذا الحد؛ كانت مريم أيضًا من صهرت ذهب الإسرائيليات ليسهل حمله أثناء الخروج من مصر، وهو الذهب نفسه الذي استعمله السامري لاحقًا في صناعة العجل.
لها قصص كثيرة في تأييد نبوة أخيها، ولها أيضًا قصة إنسانية مؤثرة: أصيبت بالبرص لأنها عارضت زواج موسى من امرأة حبشية، ثم اعتزلت في خيمتها، تابَتْ، وتوفيت بعد توبتها. هكذا كانت مريم: عالمة، مبدعة، وإنسانة تخطئ وتتوب.
أحب سير النساء المغمورات في التاريخ، وهذا ما دفعني لكتابة هذا المقال. فالتاريخ لم يحفظ لنا «قارورة مريم»، بل حُفظت بأسماء أخرى. في نجد وشرقها يسمونها «مطارة» نسبة إلى ماء المطر الثمين، وفي الحجاز «زمزمية» نسبة إلى ماء زمزم المبارك، كلاهما يذكّر بقيمة الماء وأهمية حفظه.
لو سألتَ اليوم محركات البحث عن مخترع الترمس، ستوجهك إلى الألمانيين رينولد برغر وألبرت أشنبرينر اللذين سجّلا براءة الاختراع عام 1904، أو إلى الأسكتلندي السير جيمس ديوار الذي صنع الزجاجة المفرغة من الهواء عام 1892. وكأن التاريخ بدأ من هناك.
هذا يثير السؤال الجوهري: هل سيطرة الرجال على عالم الاختراعات والنظريات حقيقة علمية، أم هي نتيجة تغييب ممنهج لأسماء النساء عبر العصور؟
كم اختراعًا ابتكرته أيدٍ نسائية، ثم نُسب إلى رجل لأنه كان الأقدر على التسجيل والتوثيق والنشر؟ مريم ليست استثناءً، بل نموذجًا لمئات، وربما آلاف النساء اللواتي أبدعن ثم طُمست أسماؤهن.
قارورة مريم لا تزال تُستخدم كل يوم في بيوتنا، ومع ذلك لا يعرف معظم الناس أن أول من صنعها كانت امرأة منذ أكثر من ثلاثة آلاف سنة.
ربما حان الوقت أن نعيد لمريم – ولكل مريم في التاريخ – حقها في الرواية. فالعلم لا جنس له، والتاريخ يجب أن يكون أمينًا.
The biography of a scientific woman erased from the history books, Mary, the sister of the Prophet Moses and Aaron, peace be upon them, was not just the sister of a prophet; she was a creative scientific mind. From the very first moment she saved her infant brother from drowning in the Nile, her journey with invention began. She coated the box with tar before her mother threw it into the river, preserving it from water and drowning. From that day on, Mary began to think and innovate.
It is said that she was the first to think of making a bottle that preserves heat and cold, what we call today a “thermos.” She created a bottle inside another bottle and placed a layer of straw between them to insulate the heat. A simple invention in appearance, genius in its effect. And she did not stop there; Mary also melted down the gold of the Israelites to make it easier to carry during the exodus from Egypt, the same gold that the Samaritan later used to make the calf.
She has many stories supporting her brother’s prophethood, and she also has a touching human story: she was afflicted with leprosy because she opposed Moses’s marriage to a Cushite woman, then she isolated herself in her tent, repented, and died after her repentance. This is how Mary was: a scholar, an innovator, and a human being who makes mistakes and repents.
I love the stories of women who are overshadowed in history, and this is what drove me to write this article. History has not preserved for us “Mary’s bottle,” but it has been preserved under other names. In Najd and its east, they call it “Matarah” in reference to the precious rainwater, and in Hijaz, “Zamzamiyah” in reference to the blessed Zamzam water, both reminding us of the value of water and the importance of preserving it.
If you were to ask search engines today about the inventor of the thermos, they would direct you to the Germans Reinhold Burger and Albert Aschenbrenner, who registered the patent in 1904, or to the Scotsman Sir James Dewar, who made the vacuum bottle in 1892. As if history began from there.
This raises the fundamental question: Is the dominance of men in the world of inventions and theories a scientific fact, or is it the result of a systematic erasure of women’s names throughout the ages?
How many inventions were created by women’s hands, then attributed to a man because he was more capable of registration, documentation, and publication? Mary is not an exception but a model for hundreds, perhaps thousands of women who innovated and then had their names erased.
Mary’s bottle is still used every day in our homes, yet most people do not know that the first person to make it was a woman over three thousand years ago.
Perhaps it is time to restore to Mary – and to every Mary in history – her right to be told. Science has no gender, and history must be truthful.
