It is not easy to write about an artistic experience of the stature of Mohammed Abdu without falling into one of two clear pitfalls: either pure admiration that melts into praise until it loses its ability to see, or a critical dryness that turns art into cold material, explained more than it is lived. However, the book “Readings and Approaches in Mohammed Abdu’s Artistic Experience and Its Social Impact,” published by Dar Al-Nukhba for Publishing and Distribution in 1447 AH, authored by Mata’in bin Yahya Jad’a, takes a third path that is more balanced and rich, a path where the language remains close to the pulse of its subject, and the idea stays alert without extinguishing the heat of art within it.
