أُقدّم اعتذاري في بداية المقال لكل من أقمت عليه حد الاستهجان بسبب نظرياته المؤامراتية في العقود الخالية، وبالذات أولئك من جيل الآباء. لقد كانت السنين الخمس الأخيرة حبلى بالمفاجآت التعيسة التي أظهرت صحة ما كان يحرّك تلك الذهنية المؤامراتية من توجّس وريبة. فمن فايروس يتسرّب من المختبر لكي يبيد العالم، ولقاح يخرج في أشهر معدودات لينقذه، وجزيرة يمارس فيها المسؤولون طقوساً جماعية من البغاء والمجون، وصهيونية شككنا بحجمها ونواياها اتضح أنها تُسيّر العالم الغربي على هواها، وإبادة يمارسها القوي أمام الكاميرات دون بنت شفة من الضعيف، وآلات ذكاء اصطناعي تتعاون لتشكّل وعياً جمعياً بهدف إخضاع البشرية، واقتصاد يعود بائساً إلى المعادن النفيسة لهشاشة أوراقه المالية، نجد أنفسنا مذهولين في صدمة مستمرة جعلتنا لا نستنكر شيئاً مهما بدت غرابته أو بانت وحشيته. كنا نستخف ونسخر من أقوال تدّعي أن اليهود يحكمون العالم، وأن حلم إسرائيل الكبرى من نهر النيل إلى الفرات، وأن بعض قادة العالم تجمعهم ماسونية باطنية، وأن حقوق الإنسان كذبة كبرى ابتدعها الغرب، وأن نهاية العالم قد تكون بفايروس مصنوع أو بذكاء مصطنع، حتى بتنا نعيش بعضاً من كل ذلك واقعاً في خمس سنين غبراء.
قال لي أحد الزملاء هازئاً: ما علينا من الآن سوى تصديق نظرية المؤامرة بدل التحليلات العلمية المملة، فقد صَدّقها امتحان الزمن.
غير أني بعد الاعتذار أجد نفسي مضطراً لشرح سبب رد تلك الذهنية المؤامراتية وإصراري على دفعها حتى الآن. سبب إحجامي عن تقبّل المؤامراتية لم يكن يوماً يقيناً بخطئها أو نفوراً من عجيب طرحها، بقدر ما كان رغبة صادقة لعدم الميل عن منهج العقلانية والتدافع بالدليل. قد يقبل العقلاني أغرب الأحداث وأحلكها إذا توالت أدلة ملامسته للواقع، وقد يدفع الواضح والمبهج منها إذا تواترت أدلة الحيد عنه. إلا أني بدأت أتفهم منهج الريبة وتوقع الأسوأ عند المؤامراتي وقفزه على المنطق لصنع استنتاجات استلهمتها قريحته، بسبب إدراك خفي عنده لطبيعة البشر الشريرة وفهم تاريخي لمعاودتهم الدورة الفاسدة ذاتها. يزيد هذا الإدراك مع تقدم العمر البيولوجي عند القارئ النهم للتاريخ والمتابع المتفاني للسياسة، مما قد يقوده إلى الإنصات للصوت التوجسي بداخله والابتعاد عن العقلانية الساذجة حسب رأيه. أتكلم هنا عن المؤامراتي المطّلِع المُلِم بطبيعة الحال، فهناك من يركب على الموجة من الجهلاء ليتقيأ استنتاجات ما أنزل الله بها من سلطان، ودخول هؤلاء على الخط هو أكثر ما يُنفّر من الذهنية المؤامراتية. العقلانية في نهاية الأمر لها ما عليها، فهي ليست مطلقة حسب مدرسة هربرت سيمون، بل محدودة بضيق الوقت ونقص المعلومات والقيود المعرفية.
يقول سيمون أن العقلانيين في الغالب «إرضائيون» مجبولون دون علمهم على التوصل إلى أقرب الحلول المرضية عقلانياً، وليسوا «موسعين» في سعي متواصل منهك للوصول إلى أصدق الحلول العقلانية وأقربها للحقيقة. والعقلانية لا تصلح للإثبات، بل للتفنيد حسب مدرسة كارل بوبر، فلا يوجد هناك نظرية صحيحة بالإطلاق، وكل شيء قابل للتكذيب عبر التمحيص المستمر والإخضاع اللا متواني للتجربة العلمية، بهدف تفنيد ما ارتضاه العقلانيون أنفسهم. يوضح كل ذلك أن العقلانية تقدّم احترام العقل على بلوغ الحقيقة، وأنها منهج للتحري والشك أكثر منها أداة لبلوغ الواقع. فلا عجب إذن أن تكون العقلانية سبباً لدفع المؤامراتية بعيداً رغم فوز الأخيرة عليها جزئياً باختبار بلوغ الحقيقة في الآونة الأخيرة من الزمن.
قد يكون الأجدى للمؤامراتي أن يعترف بعبثية منهجه وتحجيمه للعقل قبل الرمي بنظرياته وإن أصابت، وللعقلاني أن يعلن أن الحقيقة وإن جانبها لا تستحق أبداً أن يقدّم لها عقله قرباناً.
I apologize at the beginning of this article to anyone I have subjected to disdain due to their conspiratorial theories in the past decades, especially those from the generation of fathers. The last five years have been filled with unfortunate surprises that have revealed the validity of what has driven that conspiratorial mindset of suspicion and doubt. From a virus leaking from a lab to wipe out the world, and a vaccine emerging in a matter of months to save it, to an island where officials engage in collective rituals of debauchery and immorality, and Zionism, the scale and intentions of which we doubted, turning out to steer the Western world to its liking, and extermination being carried out by the powerful in front of cameras without a word from the weak, and artificial intelligence collaborating to form a collective consciousness aimed at subjugating humanity, and an economy returning to a miserable state reliant on precious metals due to the fragility of its financial papers, we find ourselves stunned in a continuous shock that has made us not condemn anything, no matter how strange it seemed or how brutal it appeared. We used to mock and scoff at claims that Jews rule the world, that the dream of Greater Israel stretches from the Nile to the Euphrates, that some world leaders are bound by hidden Freemasonry, that human rights are a grand lie invented by the West, and that the end of the world could come from a manufactured virus or artificial intelligence, until we began to live some of all that as reality in five bleak years.
One of my colleagues mockingly said to me: “From now on, we only need to believe in conspiracy theories instead of the boring scientific analyses, as time has validated them.”
However, after my apology, I find myself compelled to explain the reason for rejecting that conspiratorial mindset and my insistence on pushing against it until now. My reluctance to accept conspiratorial thinking has never been a certainty of its wrongness or a repulsion from its strange propositions, but rather a sincere desire not to deviate from a rational approach and the pursuit of evidence. A rational person may accept the strangest and darkest events if evidence of their connection to reality accumulates, and may reject the obvious and pleasant if evidence of deviation from it becomes overwhelming. However, I have begun to understand the mindset of suspicion and expectation of the worst in the conspiratorial thinker, and their leap over logic to create conclusions inspired by their imagination, due to a hidden awareness of the malevolent nature of humans and a historical understanding of their repeated return to the same corrupt cycle. This awareness increases with the biological aging of the reader who is eager for history and the devoted follower of politics, which may lead them to listen to the voice of suspicion within them and distance themselves from what they consider naive rationality. I am speaking here about the informed conspiratorial thinker, as there are those who ride the wave of ignorance to spew conclusions that have no basis in reality, and the entry of these people into the discussion is what most repels the conspiratorial mindset. Rationality, in the end, has its limitations; it is not absolute according to Herbert Simon’s school, but rather constrained by the limitations of time, lack of information, and cognitive constraints.
Simon states that rationalists are often “satisficers” who, without realizing it, arrive at the closest satisfactory solutions rationally, rather than being “maximizers” in a continuous exhausting pursuit of the most accurate rational solutions and those closest to the truth. Rationality is not suitable for proof, but for refutation according to Karl Popper’s school; there is no theory that is absolutely correct, and everything is subject to falsification through continuous scrutiny and relentless subjection to scientific experimentation, with the aim of refuting what rationalists themselves have accepted. All of this clarifies that rationality prioritizes respect for reason over reaching the truth, and that it is a method of inquiry and skepticism more than it is a tool for achieving reality. It is no wonder, then, that rationality serves to push conspiratorial thinking away, despite the latter’s partial victory over it in the recent test of reaching the truth.
It may be more beneficial for the conspiratorial thinker to acknowledge the futility of their approach and its limitation on reason before throwing out their theories, even if they turn out to be correct, and for the rationalist to declare that the truth, even if it is elusive, is never worth sacrificing their mind for.
