كشفت بعثة أثرية مصرية-ألمانية مشتركة عن نحو 13 ألف قطعة أوستراكا (شقف فخارية تحمل كتابات) خلال موسم الحفائر الأثري الحالي في موقع أتريبس الأثري بمحافظة سوهاج، في اكتشاف يُعد من أبرز النتائج العلمية التي تسلط الضوء على جوانب الحياة اليومية في مصر القديمة عبر أكثر من ألف عام.
وتعمل البعثة بالتعاون بين المجلس الأعلى للآثار المصري وجامعة توبنجن الألمانية ضمن مشروع أثري مستمر في الموقع منذ سنوات.
إضافة علمية لفهم تاريخ مصر
من جانبه، وقال وزير السياحة والآثار شريف فتحي إن هذا الكشف يمثل إضافة علمية مهمة لفهم التاريخ الاجتماعي والاقتصادي لمصر عبر العصور المختلفة، مشيراً إلى أن الاكتشافات المتتابعة في المواقع الأثرية المصرية تعكس ثراء الحضارة المصرية وتعزز مكانة البلاد كمركز عالمي للدراسات الأثرية.
رقم قياسي عالمي في عدد الأوستراكات
فيما أكد الأمين العام للمجلس الأعلى للآثارالدكتور هشام الليثي أن الاكتشاف الجديد يرفع إجمالي عدد الأوستراكات التي عُثر عليها في أتريبس منذ بدء أعمال البعثة عام 2005 إلى نحو 143 ألف قطعة، وهو رقم قياسي عالمي لعدد الشقف الفخارية المكتوبة المكتشفة في موقع أثري واحد.
وأوضح أن هذا الرقم يتجاوز ما تم اكتشافه في موقع بدير المدينة بغرب الأقصر، كما يفوق ما عُثر عليه في أي موقع أثري آخر في مصر خلال أكثر من قرنين من أعمال التنقيب.
أغنى موقع بالأوستراكات الفلكية
وأشار رئيس قطاع الآثار المصرية بالمجلس الأعلى للآثار محمد عبدالبديع، إلى أن البعثة تمكنت خلال السنوات الثماني الماضية، من اكتشاف أكثر من 42 ألف أوستراكا في الموقع.
وأضاف أن أتريبس يُعد أغنى موقع في مصر بالأوستراكات المرتبطة بالأبراج الفلكية، حيث عُثر على أكثر من 130 قطعة تتناول موضوعات فلكية، كُتب معظمها بالخطين الديموطيقي والهيراطيقي.
نصوص بعدة لغات تمتد لأكثر من 1000 عام
أوضح رئيس البعثة من الجانب الألماني الدكتور كريستيان ليتزأن الأوستراكات المكتشفة تضم نصوصاً مكتوبة بلغات وخطوط متعددة تمتد عبر أكثر من ألف عام من التاريخ المصري.
وأشار إلى أن أقدم النصوص المكتشفة هي إيصالات ضريبية مكتوبة بالخط الديموطيقي تعود إلى القرن الثالث قبل الميلاد، بينما تعود أحدثها إلى بطاقات أوانٍ مكتوبة باللغة العربية بين القرنين التاسع والحادي عشر الميلاديين.
وأضاف أن ما بين 60% إلى 75% من الأوستراكات المكتشفة تحمل كتابات بالخط الديموطيقي، في حين أن 15% إلى 30% منها مكتوبة باليونانية، بينما تراوح نسبة الأوستراكات التي تحمل رسومات تصويرية وهندسية بين 4% و5%. كما أن نحو 1.5% منها يحمل كتابات بالخط الهيراطيقي، و0.25% بالخط الهيروغليفي، في حين تحمل 0.2% كتابات باللغة القبطية، وحوالى 0.1% كتابات باللغة العربية.
سجلات للحياة اليومية والدينية
وقال مدير الموقع الأثري الدكتور ماركوس مولر، إن معظم النصوص المكتوبة على الأوستراكات تتضمن وثائق إدارية واقتصادية مثل الحسابات والقوائم وإيصالات الضرائب وأوامر التسليم، إضافة إلى تمارين تعليمية للتلاميذ.
كما تحتوي بعض النصوص على كتابات دينية وكهنوتية مثل الترانيم والصلوات ونصوص التكريس وسجلات تتعلق بسلامة الأضاحي.
مدينة قديمة ومركز لعبادة آلهة الأسد
ويقع موقع أتريبس في نجع الشيخ حمد على بعد نحو 7 كيلومترات غرب سوهاج، وفي العصور القديمة كانت المدينة جزءاً من الإقليم التاسع من أقاليم مصر العليا، وكانت عاصمته مدينة أخميم الواقعة شرق النيل.
وكانت المدينة مركزاً لعبادة المعبودة ربيت، التي كانت تُصوَّر في هيئة أنثى الأسد وتُعرف بعين إله الشمس، وشكّلت ثالوثاً محلياً مع المعبود مين رب أخميم، والمعبود الطفل كولنثيس.
A joint Egyptian-German archaeological mission has revealed approximately 13,000 pieces of ostraca (pottery shards bearing inscriptions) during the current archaeological excavation season at the ancient site of Atrebus in Sohag Governorate, in a discovery considered one of the most significant scientific results that highlights aspects of daily life in ancient Egypt over more than a thousand years.
The mission operates in collaboration between the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities and the University of Tübingen in Germany as part of an ongoing archaeological project at the site for several years.
A Scientific Addition to Understanding Egypt’s History
For his part, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy stated that this discovery represents an important scientific addition to understanding the social and economic history of Egypt across different eras, noting that the successive discoveries at Egyptian archaeological sites reflect the richness of Egyptian civilization and enhance the country’s status as a global center for archaeological studies.
A World Record in the Number of Ostraca
Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr. Hisham El-Leithy, confirmed that the new discovery raises the total number of ostraca found at Atrebus since the mission began in 2005 to about 143,000 pieces, which is a world record for the number of inscribed pottery shards discovered at a single archaeological site.
He explained that this number exceeds what was discovered at the Deir el-Medina site in western Luxor, and surpasses what has been found at any other archaeological site in Egypt over more than two centuries of excavation work.
The Richest Site in Astronomical Ostraca
Mohamed Abdel-Badi, head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities, pointed out that the mission has managed over the past eight years to discover more than 42,000 ostraca at the site.
He added that Atrebus is considered the richest site in Egypt for ostraca related to astronomical towers, where more than 130 pieces addressing astronomical topics have been found, most of which are written in Demotic and Hieratic scripts.
Texts in Multiple Languages Spanning Over 1000 Years
Dr. Christian Litz, the head of the German side of the mission, clarified that the discovered ostraca contain texts written in multiple languages and scripts spanning over a thousand years of Egyptian history.
He noted that the oldest discovered texts are tax receipts written in Demotic script dating back to the third century BC, while the most recent ones are vessel labels written in Arabic between the 9th and 11th centuries AD.
He added that between 60% to 75% of the discovered ostraca bear inscriptions in Demotic script, while 15% to 30% are written in Greek, and the percentage of ostraca that carry pictorial and geometric drawings ranges between 4% and 5%. Additionally, about 1.5% contain inscriptions in Hieratic script, and 0.25% in Hieroglyphic script, while 0.2% bear writings in Coptic, and around 0.1% in Arabic.
Records of Daily and Religious Life
Dr. Markus Müller, the site director, stated that most of the texts written on the ostraca include administrative and economic documents such as accounts, lists, tax receipts, and delivery orders, in addition to educational exercises for students.
Some texts also contain religious and priestly writings such as hymns, prayers, consecration texts, and records related to the safety of sacrifices.
An Ancient City and a Center for the Worship of Lion Gods
The site of Atrebus is located in Naj’ Sheikh Hamad about 7 kilometers west of Sohag, and in ancient times, the city was part of the ninth district of Upper Egypt, with its capital being the city of Akhmim located east of the Nile.
The city was a center for the worship of the goddess Rbīt, who was depicted in the form of a female lion and known as the Eye of the Sun God, forming a local triad with the god Min, Lord of Akhmim, and the child god Kolenthis.
