ضربت عاصفة ثلجية كبرى تُعرف باسم نورإيستر ولايات شمال شرق الولايات المتحدة، متسببةً في شلل واسع للحياة اليومية، ودافعة السلطات إلى إصدار تحذيرات عاجلة لأكثر من 40 مليون شخص.
وخلال ساعات الليل، اجتاحت العاصفة المنطقة بعواصف كثيفة ورياح عاتية، ما أدى إلى إلغاء أكثر من 5600 رحلة جوية وتأخير مئات أخرى، بحسب بيانات خدمة تتبع الرحلات FlightAware، فيما انقطعت الكهرباء عن مئات الآلاف من المنازل والشركات.
نيويورك تتحصّن
في نيويورك، كان رئيس البلدية أصدر قراراً بحظر حركة السير إلا للضرورات القصوى حتى ظهر أمس (الاثنين)، مع إغلاق المدارس، في خطوة مماثلة لإجراءات اتخذتها ولايتا نيوجيرسي ورود آيلاند.
كما أُغلق مقر الأمم المتحدة في نيويورك، بينما أقامت مدن كبرى مثل فيلادلفيا مراكز تدفئة طارئة لمساعدة العالقين في البرد القارس.
أرقام قياسية
سجل مطار تي إف غرين في رود آيلاند نحو 80 سنتيمتراً من الثلوج، وهو مستوى قياسي في الولاية، بينما غطى الثلج مساحة سنترال بارك بسماكة بلغت 50 سنتيمتراً، في أعلى معدل لعاصفة واحدة منذ أكثر من عشر سنوات.
وأكدت الهيئة الوطنية للأرصاد الجوية أن تساقط الثلوج سيتراجع ليلاً، لكنها حذرت من استمرار الرياح القوية في عدة مناطق.
كارثة دامية
وتأتي هذه العاصفة بعد أسابيع فقط من منخفض جوي مدمر أودى بحياة أكثر من مئة شخص، ما ضاعف القلق بين السكان. وبينما عبّر كثيرون عن استيائهم من تكرار موجات الطقس القاسي، وجد آخرون في المشهد الشتوي فرصة نادرة للاستمتاع بمدن غطتها الثلوج بالكامل.

During the night hours, the storm swept through the area with heavy snowfall and strong winds, leading to the cancellation of more than 5,600 flights and delays for hundreds more, according to data from flight tracking service FlightAware, while power was cut off to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses.
New York Fortifies
In New York, the mayor issued an order banning traffic except for emergencies until yesterday afternoon (Monday), with schools closed, in a move similar to measures taken by the states of New Jersey and Rhode Island.
The United Nations headquarters in New York was also closed, while major cities like Philadelphia set up emergency heating centers to assist those stranded in the freezing cold.
Record Numbers
TF Green Airport in Rhode Island recorded about 80 centimeters of snow, a record level for the state, while Central Park was covered with snow to a thickness of 50 centimeters, the highest amount from a single storm in over ten years.
The National Weather Service confirmed that snowfall would taper off at night, but warned of continued strong winds in several areas.
Bloody Disaster
This storm comes just weeks after a devastating low-pressure system that claimed the lives of more than a hundred people, increasing anxiety among residents. While many expressed their frustration over the recurring harsh weather patterns, others found in the winter scene a rare opportunity to enjoy cities completely blanketed in snow.
