The Imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Dr. Faisal bin Jameel Ghazawi, advised Muslims to fear Allah, for whoever fears his Lord, He will make a distinction between truth and falsehood for him and provide him with the means to achieve the good he desires. He said in the Friday sermon delivered today at the Grand Mosque: One of the most dangerous trials a person can face is the turning of his heart and the confusion of his affairs, so he sees the ugly as beautiful, the beautiful as ugly, the false as truth, the truth as false, misguidance as guidance, and guidance as misguidance, and he sees the wrong as right and the right as wrong. Allah has made clear the condition of certain people whose deeds have become null and void, thinking that they are doing good.

He added: Indeed, the one who reflects on the Book of Allah and contemplates its verses will realize that the embellishment of deeds comes in two types: good and ugly. As for the good embellishment, it is what Allah has attributed to Himself, as in His saying: (Thus We have adorned for every nation its deed). In this verse, He attributed the embellishment to Himself, glorified and exalted, as creation and will. As for the ugly embellishment, it is what He has attributed to its cause and to those who carry it out through their hands.

He pointed out that the Noble Quran is full of various examples of those whom Satan has led astray and ensnared in his traps, beautifying for them misguidance and making evil and error appear good. Among these is His saying: (Then Satan whispered to him, saying, ‘O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and a kingdom that will never waste away?’), thus beautifying for Adam and his wife the act of eating from the tree, leading them to disobey their enemy’s command and go against their Lord’s command. Then Allah accepted their repentance and guided them to remain steadfast on the right path.

Sheikh Ghazawi affirmed that the embellishment that Satan employs to lead a person astray comes in two types: the beautification of the ugly and the vilification of the good. An example of the beautification of the ugly is found in His saying: (And thus have We made pleasing to many of the polytheists the killing of their children, to bring them to ruin and to confuse them in their religion), as the devils beautified for these polytheists the killing of their children out of fear of poverty and the burying of daughters out of fear of disgrace, even though this act is the epitome of ugliness and the height of evil.

He explained that one of the greatest effects of the beautification of evil deeds is that a person prefers falsehood over truth and chooses misguidance over guidance, and his ugly deeds of polytheism, disbelief, and sins are made to appear good to him. Allah said: (And ‘Aad and Thamud, and it has become clear to you from their dwellings, and Satan has made their deeds pleasing to them, and has barred them from the path, while they were endowed with insight).

He concluded the sermon by saying: The truthful one with his Lord is not equal to the one whose heart is filled with faith and who is guided and follows the truth, free from desires, and is on a light from his Lord, with clear evidence in his religion, and does not take pride in his deeds but is always cautious of Satan, constantly seeking Allah’s help and support; adhering to His command in being steadfast on His Sharia. This is not equal to the one who is floundering in darkness, who has succumbed to desires, and has been dominated by Satan, who has made falsehood appear good to him and has prevented him from following guidance, and has cast into his heart doubts and desires that lead him to sin and prevent him from repenting, thus becoming arrogant and rejecting advice, following only his whims, doing whatever he sees as good and abandoning whatever he sees as ugly.

Similarly, the Imam and preacher of the Prophet’s Mosque, Sheikh Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Al-Baijan, advised Muslims to fear Allah in what He has commanded and to refrain from what He has prohibited and warned against. Allah, the Exalted, said: (O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims). He explained that man is poor and in need of his Lord who created him and fashioned him, as He, the Exalted, said: (And when distress touches you at sea, lost are those you invoke except for Him).

He continued that Allah, the Exalted, is capable of answering the supplications of those in need and fulfilling the needs of the distressed, answering every supplicant and granting every hopeful, for His treasures do not diminish, and what is with Him does not run out, pointing out that people’s demands are numerous and do not stop at a limit. In the hadith narrated by Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet, peace be upon him, in what he narrated from Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, that He said: (O My servants, I have forbidden oppression upon Myself and made it forbidden among you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are misguided except for those whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me, and I will guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those whom I have fed, so seek food from Me, and I will feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except for those whom I have clothed, so seek clothing from Me, and I will clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek My forgiveness, and I will forgive you. O My servants, you will never reach Me to harm Me, and you will never reach Me to benefit Me. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were to be as pious as the most pious heart of any one of you, it would not increase My dominion in anything. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one of you, it would not decrease My dominion in anything. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were to stand in one place and ask Me, and I gave every person his request, it would not decrease what I have except as a needle decreases in the sea. O My servants, these are your deeds, which I record for you, then I will fulfill them for you. So whoever finds good should praise Allah, and whoever finds other than that should blame no one but himself).

The Imam and preacher of the Prophet’s Mosque clarified that supplication is worship and one of the greatest acts of devotion, and its status is great and its benefits are vast. It is the most effective means of attracting blessings and the best way to avert calamities. It is the greatest door to fulfilling needs, attaining desires, raising ranks, obtaining all good, and warding off evil and harm.

He continued that supplication is the companion of the believer in times of hardship and a source of comfort in times of distress.

The Imam and preacher of the Prophet’s Mosque urged the congregation to turn to Allah in supplication, raising their hands and being sincere in their prayers, as Allah said: (Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors), explaining that it is a form of weakness and loss to refrain from seeking one’s needs from Allah, who commanded him to ask and promised him a response. In the hadith narrated by Abu Huraira, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: (The hand of Allah is full; it does not decrease by spending, generous by night and day), and he said: (Have you seen what has been spent since Allah created the heavens and the earth? It has not diminished what is in His hand), and he said: (His Throne is upon the water, and in His other hand is the scale, lowering and raising).

The Imam and preacher of the Prophet’s Mosque stated that Allah has favored His servants by fulfilling their needs and commanded them to supplicate and promised them a response, granting success to whom He wills. Allah said: (And your Lord says, ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you’), and He said: (And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me that they may be guided). In the hadith narrated by Ubadah bin Al-Samit, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: (There is no Muslim on earth who calls upon Allah with a supplication except that Allah grants it to him or averts from him an evil like it, as long as he does not supplicate for sin or for severing ties of kinship). A man from the people said: (If we ask a lot, Allah is more), and in the narration of Abu Sa’id, there is an addition: (Or He stores for him a reward like it).

The Imam and preacher of the Prophet’s Mosque urged the congregation to seek the best times for supplication, as they are more likely to be answered and more deserving of requests, explaining that the time of prostration, the last third of the night when Allah descends to the lowest heaven, the last hour of Friday, and the time between the adhan and iqamah are more likely to be answered.

He continued that the supplication of the fasting person, the traveler, the oppressed, the parent, the one in distress, the righteous man, and the Muslim for his Muslim brother in his absence are all significant.

He explained that among the conditions for the acceptance of supplication are sincerity, humility, reverence, and submission, and that one should not transgress in supplication, not calling for harm upon oneself, one’s wealth, or one’s children, nor for injustice or sin or severing ties of kinship.

He also indicated that supplication should be made with a soft voice and determination in the request.

He concluded by stating that Muslims must strive in their supplications with certainty that Allah, the Exalted, accepts them, hears them, and responds to them. In the hadith narrated by Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: (Call upon Allah while you are certain of a response, and know that Allah does not respond to a supplication from a heart that is heedless and distracted).
