على وقع خلافات عميقة فجرتها الحرب الأمريكية الإسرائيلية مع إيران، يتجه الملك تشارلز الثالث إلى الولايات المتحدة أواخر أبريل الجاري، في أول زيارة رسمية له، في وقت يبدو فيه التحالف عبر الأطلسي على حافة الانهيار؟
توتر غير مسبوق منذ عهود
وحسب صحيفة «تايمز» البريطانية، فإن تدهور العلاقة عبر الأطلسي يهيمن على زيارة ملك بريطانيا إلى واشنطن التي تتزامن مع الذكرى الـ250 لفقدان بريطانيا لمستعمراتها الأمريكية، مؤكدة أن العلاقة بين البلدين تواجه توترا غير مسبوق منذ عقود.
واعتبرت الصحيفة أن الزيارة تخفي وراءها أزمات حقيقية تهدد استقرار التحالف، غير أن السخرية الأكثر إلحاحا والأقل مرحا مصدرها أن الزعيمين سيحتفلان بتحالف يبدو أكثر اهتراءً، وأقل واقعية وأهمية، وأكثر عرضة للخطر من أي وقت مضى خلال السبعين عاما الماضية.
وأفادت بأن التحالف عبر الأطلسي شهد خلال العام الماضي توترا شديدا بسبب مواقف الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب المثيرة للجدل، ومن ضمنها ميله الواضح إلى روسيا بقيادة فلاديمير بوتين ومعارضته لأوكرانيا، إلى جانب حديثه عن ضم كندا وغزو غرينلاند، بالإضافة إلى دخوله في حرب عالية المخاطر في إيران دون التشاور مع الحلفاء الأوروبيين.
بريطانيا بين المطرقة والسندان
واعتبرت التايمز، أن هذه المواقف ضعف التزام واشنطن تجاه الأمن الجماعي لحلف شمال الأطلسي (الناتو)، وزادت من شعور الأوروبيين بالاعتماد الطويل على القوة الأمريكية دون مساهمة متساوية.
وكشفت البحرية الملكية ومساهمة بريطانيا المحدودة في دعم القوات الأمريكية خلال حرب إيران عن وقوع بريطانيا «بين المطرقة والسندان»، حيث تقودها الرغبة التاريخية في البقاء قريبة من أمريكا قوية في عالم أصبح أكثر خطورة، ولكنها تواجه الآن معارضة سياسية محلية حادة، وإدراكا متزايدا بين نخبة الأمن القومي بأن فائدة «العلاقة الخاصة» تتضاءل بسرعة.
ولفتت إلى أن تصاعد غضب ترمب من تأخر بريطانيا في دعم الولايات المتحدة في بعض القضايا الإستراتيجية -مثل إبقاء خطوط الشحن مفتوحة في الخليج- يعكس هشاشة العلاقة.
قدرة التحالف على الاستمرار
ورأت الصحيفة أن الاختلاف في المواقف بشأن القضايا العسكرية والاقتصادية، يثير تساؤلات حول مدى قدرة التحالف على الاستمرار بعد انتهاء ولاية ترمب، لأن الانقسام بين البلدين أصبح أعمق من شخصية الرئيس نفسه، وأكثر تأثيرا من أي خلافات حول حرب جديدة في الشرق الأوسط.
ورغم كل هذه التوترات، توقعت أن تظل مظاهر اللياقة والدبلوماسية قائمة خلال الزيارة، مع توجيه التحية الرمزية والتحفظ السياسي، لكنها أكدت أن كلا الزعيمين يدركان أن العلاقة بين بلديهما تحمل إرثا تاريخيا عميقا أكبر من أي توافق مستقبلي يمكن تحقيقه في ظل الظروف الحالية.

Unprecedented Tension Since Ages
According to the British newspaper “The Times,” the deterioration of the transatlantic relationship dominates the British monarch’s visit to Washington, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of Britain’s loss of its American colonies, emphasizing that the relationship between the two countries is facing unprecedented tension for decades.
The newspaper considered that the visit conceals real crises threatening the stability of the alliance, but the most urgent and least cheerful irony is that the two leaders will celebrate an alliance that appears more tattered, less realistic and significant, and more at risk than ever in the past seventy years.
It reported that the transatlantic alliance experienced severe tension last year due to the controversial positions of U.S. President Donald Trump, including his clear inclination towards Russia under Vladimir Putin and his opposition to Ukraine, as well as his talk about annexing Canada and invading Greenland, in addition to entering into a high-risk war in Iran without consulting European allies.
Britain Between a Rock and a Hard Place
The Times considered that these positions weakened Washington’s commitment to the collective security of NATO, increasing Europeans’ feelings of long-term reliance on American power without equal contribution.
The Royal Navy and Britain’s limited contribution to supporting U.S. forces during the Iran War revealed that Britain is “between a rock and a hard place,” driven by a historical desire to stay close to a strong America in a world that has become more dangerous, but now faces sharp local political opposition and a growing awareness among the national security elite that the benefits of the “special relationship” are rapidly diminishing.
It pointed out that Trump’s rising anger over Britain’s delay in supporting the U.S. on certain strategic issues—such as keeping shipping lanes open in the Gulf—reflects the fragility of the relationship.
The Alliance’s Ability to Endure
The newspaper viewed that the differences in positions regarding military and economic issues raise questions about the alliance’s ability to endure after Trump’s presidency, as the divide between the two countries has become deeper than the president’s own personality and more influential than any disagreements over a new war in the Middle East.
Despite all these tensions, it anticipated that displays of decorum and diplomacy would remain during the visit, with symbolic greetings and political restraint, but it emphasized that both leaders are aware that the relationship between their countries carries a deep historical legacy greater than any future consensus that can be achieved under current circumstances.
