عندما يسود الليل في هدوئه العميق وتنسحب الأصوات من حول العالم شيئاً فشيئاً، لا يهم المثقف القارئ الضوء الخافت أمامه من المصباح سوى أن يرافق الكلمات التي تتراقص على الصفحات، فتمنحه حياة ثانية بعيدة عن صخب النهار ووجوه الناس، فالليل هنا مساحة يكتشف فيها القارئ نفسه، خصوصاً وقد اختفى كل ما يشتت الانتباه له من ضغوط وأعذار؛ ليغوص في عوالم الفكر والمعنى مدركاً أن هذه اللحظة الهادئة تحمل عمراً كاملاً من الهدوء والفهم.
القارئ الليلي يعرف تماماً أن القراءة تمنحه القدرة على أن يكون أكثر من شخص واحد، إنه يعبر الأزمنة، يزور أماكن وأفكاراً لم يكن ليصل إليها في يقظة النهار، ومع كل صفحة يمر بها يشعر أن القراءة في هذا الوقت المتأخر تحمل معها وعداً بأن المعرفة هي معرفة الفضاء الداخلي للذات الذي لم يكتشفه بعد. وأنا أعرف هذا الطريق جيداً لأنني سلكته وما زلت أسير فيه حتى الآن ليلة بعد ليلة، وفي هذا الوقت تحديداً تصبح القراءة بالنسبة لي أكثر صدقاً وقسوة، وأكثر رحمة في آن واحد، وكلما قرأت أكثر اقتربت أكثر من الصورة التي أريد أن أكونها بعيداً عن ضجيج الأدوار المفروضة عليّ في وضح النهار.
إن القراءة الليلية تصنع صمتاً داخلياً قبل أن تصنع معرفة، صمتاً يتيح للإنسان أن يختبر ذاته بعيداً عن ضجيج الظهور والاعتبارات السطحية، فإذا صادفت يوماً مثقفاً صامتاً قليل الكلام، لا يسعى للظهور ولا يلهث وراء الإقناع، فلا تفسّر هدوءه بالبرود أو الغرور، لأن صمته غالباً نتاج ليالٍ طوال قضاها في القراءة قال فيها ما لم يقله للناس، فقد أصبح الصمت لديه امتداداً طبيعياً لكل تلك الحوارات العميقة التي عاشها بينه وبين الكتب.
ومع مرور الليالي تتكوّن بين القارئ والكتاب علاقة لا يراها أحد، تقوم على الوفاء الصامت بين عين تبحث عن المعنى وصفحات لا تبخل به، وربما لا يلاحظ الناس هذا التحوّل لأنه يحدث بعيداً عن الأضواء، لكن القارئ الحقيقي يعرف في أعماقه أن تلك اللحظات الهادئة هي اقتراب أعمق من الحياة، إذ تعلّمه القراءة الليلية أن يعيش بوعي أكبر، وأن يرى الأشياء بصفاء لا تمنحه ضوضاء النهار، فيخرج إلى العالم أقل صخباً، وأكثر امتلاء بالمعنى.
When night falls in its deep tranquility and the sounds around the world gradually fade away, the cultured reader cares little for the dim light before them from the lamp, except that it accompanies the words dancing on the pages, granting them a second life far from the clamor of the day and the faces of people. Night here is a space where the reader discovers themselves, especially as everything that distracts them from pressures and excuses has vanished; they dive into realms of thought and meaning, realizing that this quiet moment carries a whole lifetime of calm and understanding.
The night reader knows perfectly well that reading gives them the ability to be more than one person. They traverse time, visiting places and ideas they would never reach in the daylight. With every page they turn, they feel that reading at this late hour carries with it the promise that knowledge is the understanding of the inner space of the self that has yet to be discovered. I know this path well because I have walked it and continue to walk it even now, night after night. At this particular time, reading becomes for me more truthful and harsh, yet more merciful at the same time. The more I read, the closer I get to the image I want to be, far from the noise of the roles imposed on me in the light of day.
Night reading creates an inner silence before it creates knowledge, a silence that allows a person to test themselves away from the noise of appearances and superficial considerations. So, if you ever encounter a silent intellectual who speaks little, who does not seek to appear or chase after persuasion, do not interpret their calmness as coldness or arrogance, for their silence is often the result of long nights spent reading, during which they have said what they did not say to people. Silence has become a natural extension of all those deep dialogues they have lived between themselves and the books.
As the nights pass, a relationship forms between the reader and the book that no one sees, based on the silent loyalty between an eye searching for meaning and pages that do not withhold it. Perhaps people do not notice this transformation because it happens away from the spotlight, but the true reader knows deep down that those quiet moments are a deeper approach to life, as night reading teaches them to live with greater awareness and to see things with a clarity that the noise of the day does not grant them, emerging into the world less noisy and more filled with meaning.
