يبدو أن استعراض استضافة الولايات في أمريكا فجّرت خلاف التصريحات بين رئيس بلدية نيويورك المنتخب زهران ممداني، وحاكمة نيوجيرسي المنتخبة ميكي شيريل، حيث تبادلا الرد بالتصريحات الإعلامية بينهما بسبب تباهي كل واحد منهما بولايته التي ستستضيف مونديال كأس العالم 2026، والمنافسة محتدمة بين (نيويورك ونيوجيرسي)، حول أحقية كل ولاية في التباهي باستضافة مباريات كأس العالم 2026، مما أحدثت جدلاً واسعاً بإعلان كل واحد منهما أن مدينته ستكون مضيفة للمونديال.
من جانبه، قالت ميكي بلهجة حاسمة: «مع كامل الاحترام لممداني، ربما لا يعرف أين ستقام المباريات، لأنها ستقام في نيوجيرسي».

وكشف مسؤول مطلع داخل حكومة نيوجيرسي أن الإدارة الجديدة لم تكن راضية عن الاتفاقيات السابقة التي ورثتها من الحاكم السابق فيل مورفي، خصوصاً أن نيويورك لا تتحمل أي مساهمة تذكر في تكاليف النقل الضخمة.
وفي محاولة لتغطية النفقات، أعلنت نيوجيرسي سلسلة إجراءات مثيرة للجدل، تضمنت زيادة ضريبة المبيعات بنسبة 3% في منطقة ميدولاندز طوال فترة البطولة، وفرض رسوم إضافية على الفنادق بنسبة 2.5%، وإضافة 50 سنتاً على كل رحلة لخدمات النقل التشاركي، ورفع أسعار الحافلات الخاصة بالمباريات.

وكانت السلطات أعلنت في البداية أن تكلفة رحلة الحافلات ذهاباً وإياباً من مانهاتن إلى الملعب ستبلغ 150 دولاراً، قبل تخفيضها لاحقاً إلى 98 دولاراً بعد تدخل رعاة البطولة، مقارنة بالسعر المعتاد البالغ 12.90 دولار فقط.

For her part, Mikie stated emphatically: “With all due respect to Mamdani, he may not know where the matches will be held, as they will be held in New Jersey.”
The Sherrill administration has been working since taking office to shift a large portion of hosting costs from local taxpayers to visitors and fans, particularly those coming from abroad or from New York itself.
In contrast, New York officials believe that the city is the real attraction, and that the stadium is only a few miles from Manhattan. New York Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized that New York is not just a city hosting the World Cup, but that New York is the World Cup.
A knowledgeable official within the New Jersey government revealed that the new administration was not satisfied with the previous agreements inherited from former Governor Phil Murphy, especially since New York does not bear any significant contribution to the massive transportation costs.
In an attempt to cover expenses, New Jersey announced a series of controversial measures, including a 3% increase in sales tax in the Meadowlands area throughout the tournament, imposing an additional 2.5% fee on hotels, adding 50 cents on every ride for rideshare services, and raising prices for buses related to the matches.
Additionally, trains coming from Pennsylvania Station in New York will be limited to World Cup ticket holders four hours before the matches to ease congestion.
Initially, authorities announced that the cost of a round trip bus ride from Manhattan to the stadium would be $150, before later reducing it to $98 after the intervention of tournament sponsors, compared to the usual price of just $12.90.
