شهدت ولاية «نيوجيرسي» الأمريكية واقعة صادمة هزت الثقة في جهاز إنفاذ القانون، بعد توجيه تهمة السرقة لرقيب شرطة استغل إصابة مصورة صحفية أثناء تغطيتها لاحتجاجات ساخنة خارج سجن للهجرة في مدينة «نيوارك»، ليقوم بالاستيلاء على كاميراتها ومعداتها التي تُقدر قيمتها بنحو 10 آلاف دولار أمريكي.
وأعلن المدعي العام للولاية إلقاء القبض على الرقيب داريل براون، المسؤول في مكتب المدعي العام لمقاطعة «إسيكس»، وبحوزته الأغراض المسروقة داخل منزله في بلدة «سبارتا». وجاء هذا السقوط المدوّي بعد أن قادت التقنية الجغرافية الذكية، عبر جهاز تتبع إلكتروني زرعته المصورة في حقيبتها، السلطات مباشرة إلى مقر إقامة الشرطي.
وتعود تفاصيل الحادثة إلى ليلة السبت، حين كانت الصحفية أنجلينا كاتسانيس في مهمة ميدانية لصالح وكالة «أسوشيتد برس» (AP)، وأصيبت في ركبتها جراء ارتطام عارضة خشبية بها أثناء اشتباك عنيف بين الشرطة والمتظاهرين. وفي محاولتها المستميتة للوصول إلى الخيمة الطبية لتلقي الإسعافات، اضطرت كاتسانيس لترك حقيبة معداتها التي كانت تحمل اسمها وبيانات الاتصال بها بوضوح، لتفاجأ باختفائها تماماً فور عودتها إلى الموقع على كرسي متحرك.
وفي سردها لتلك اللحظات العصيبة، أوضحت الصحفية أنها بمجرد فحص جهاز التتبع، رصدت تحرك الحقيبة على طريق سريع بعيد، مؤكدة أن شكوكها دارت فوراً حول رجال الأمن كونهم الطرف الوحيد المخول له دخول تلك المنطقة المطوقة. وبالتزامن مع تلقيها العلاج في المستشفى، حدد القمر الصناعي موقع الحقيبة بدقة داخل منزل الشرطي براون. ولم يترك التحقيق مجالاً للشك؛ إذ كشفت مراجعة كاميرا الجسد المثبتة على ملابس الشرطي نفسه أنه تعامل مع الحقيبة في موقع الاحتجاج، كما أسفر أمر تفتيش منزله عن ضبط المعدات، التي كان بعضها لا يزال يحمل اسم الصحفية ورقم هاتفها.
وعلى خلفية هذه الفضيحة، يواجه الرقيب براون تهمة «السرقة من الدرجة الثالثة»، وتم إيقافه عن العمل فوراً وحرمانه من راتبه. ومن جانبها، عبرت كاتسانيس، المدربة على التغطيات في البيئات الخطرة، عن صدمتها العميقة جراء الحادثة التي تتناقض تماماً مع الدور المفترض لرجال الأمن في حماية الأرواح والممتلكات، مشيرة إلى أنها نجت من كسور خطيرة واقتصرت إصابتها على كدمات وتورم حاد في الساق.

The state attorney general announced the arrest of Sergeant Darryl Brown, an officer in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, who was found with the stolen items inside his home in “Sparta.” This dramatic fall from grace came after smart geographic technology led authorities directly to the officer’s residence through an electronic tracking device planted by the photojournalist in her bag.
The details of the incident date back to Saturday night, when journalist Angelina Katsanis was on a field assignment for the Associated Press (AP) and was injured in her knee after being struck by a wooden barricade during a violent clash between police and protesters. In her desperate attempt to reach the medical tent for treatment, Katsanis was forced to leave her equipment bag, which clearly bore her name and contact information, only to be shocked by its complete disappearance upon her return to the site in a wheelchair.
In recounting those tense moments, the journalist explained that as soon as she checked the tracking device, she detected the bag moving on a distant highway, confirming that her suspicions immediately turned to the security personnel, as they were the only ones authorized to enter that cordoned-off area. While receiving treatment in the hospital, the satellite accurately pinpointed the bag’s location inside Officer Brown’s home. The investigation left no room for doubt; a review of the body camera footage attached to the officer himself revealed that he had handled the bag at the protest site, and a search warrant of his home resulted in the recovery of the equipment, some of which still bore the journalist’s name and phone number.
In light of this scandal, Sergeant Brown faces a charge of “third-degree theft,” and he was immediately suspended from work and deprived of his salary. For her part, Katsanis, trained for coverage in hazardous environments, expressed her deep shock at the incident, which starkly contrasts with the supposed role of law enforcement in protecting lives and property, noting that she survived serious fractures and her injuries were limited to bruises and severe swelling in her leg.
