يمثل الملياردير الأمريكي بيل غيتس، الشريك المؤسس لشركة مايكروسوفت، اليوم (الأربعاء)، أمام لجنة رقابية في الكونغرس الأمريكي للتحقيق في الملفات المرتبطة بالممول الراحل جيفري إبستين، ليصبح أحدث شخصية بارزة تدلي بشهادتها ضمن القضية التي لا تزال تثير جدلاً واسعاً في الولايات المتحدة.
ومن المقرر أن يجري أعضاء لجنة الرقابة والإصلاح الحكومي بمجلس النواب مقابلة مغلقة مع غيتس، على غرار جلسات الاستماع السابقة التي عُقدت مع عدد من الشهود، على أن يتم نشر محاضر الشهادة في وقت لاحق، وفق الإجراءات المتبعة.
وكان رئيس اللجنة النائب الجمهوري جيمس كومر، قد طلب رسمياً من غيتس الإدلاء بشهادته بعد ورود اسمه مرات عدة في مجموعة من الوثائق التي أفرجت عنها وزارة العدل الأمريكية ضمن تحقيقاتها المتعلقة بإبستين.
وتكشف الوثائق شبكةً واسعةً من العلاقات التي نسجها إبستين مع شخصيات نافذة في قطاعات التكنولوجيا والمال والسياسة وغيرها، ورغم نفي جميع الأسماء الواردة في الملفات أي تورط في الجرائم المنسوبة إليه، فإن بعضهم حافظ على علاقات أو صداقات معه حتى بعد انكشاف سجله المرتبط بالاعتداءات الجنسية.
وتتضمن الوثائق مواعيد لاجتماعات جمعت بين غيتس وإبستين، ورسائل إلكترونية تبادلاها بشأن مشاريع خيرية، إضافة إلى صور التُقطت لهما خلال مناسبات حضراها معاً.
وبحسب المستندات، بدأت العلاقة المهنية بين الرجلين عام 2011، أي بعد 3 سنوات من إقرار إبستين بالذنب في قضية تتعلق باستدراج قاصر إلى الدعارة، واستمرت حتى أواخر عام 2014 على الأقل.
وكان إبستين قد وُجهت إليه عام 2019 اتهامات اتحادية بالاتجار الجنسي بالقاصرات والتآمر لارتكاب تلك الجرائم.
وأكدت وزارة العدل الأمريكية آنذاك أنه أنشأ شبكة واسعة من الفتيات القاصرات، بعضهن لم يتجاوزن الـ14 من العمر، واستغلهن جنسياً بين عامي 2002 و2005. وانتحر إبستين داخل محبسه عام 2019 قبل بدء محاكمته.
ولم تُوجَّه أي اتهامات إلى بيل غيتس تتعلق بقضية إبستين، كما نفى امتلاكه أي معرفة بالانتهاكات التي ارتكبها الأخير بحق الفتيات، وأكد مراراً أن لقاءاتهما اقتصرت على مناقشة أعمال خيرية وإنسانية، واصفاً ارتباطه بإبستين بأنه «خطأ فادح».
كما سبق أن أقر كل من غيتس وطليقته ميليندا فرينش غيتس بأن العلاقة التي جمعته بإبستين تسببت في توترات داخل حياتهما الزوجية.
وفي فبراير الماضي، أقرت مؤسسة غيتس بأن عدداً محدوداً من موظفيها التقوا إبستين بعدما ادعى قدرته على حشد موارد مالية كبيرة لدعم مشروعات الصحة العالمية، وأكدت المؤسسة أنها لم تنشئ معه أي صندوق خيري مشترك ولم تقدم له أي مدفوعات مالية.
وفي إطار مراجعة هذه العلاقة، كلف الرئيس التنفيذي للمؤسسة مارك سوزمان جهة مستقلة بإجراء تقييم خارجي لمدى ارتباط المؤسسة السابق بإبستين.
وتأتي شهادة غيتس بعد أشهر من جلسة استماع مغلقة خضع لها الرئيس الأمريكي الأسبق بيل كلينتون، إذ أمضى أكثر من 6 ساعات في الإجابة عن أسئلة المشرعين بشأن علاقته بإبستين قبل أكثر من عقدين.
وأظهرت السجلات أن إبستين زار البيت الأبيض مرات عدة خلال فترة رئاسة كلينتون، كما سافر الأخير أحياناً على متن الطائرة الخاصة للممول الراحل.
وأكد كلينتون خلال شهادته أنه لم يلاحظ أي مؤشرات على السلوك الإجرامي لإبستين، وأنه قطع علاقته به قبل سنوات من إقرار الأخير بالذنب عام 2008، كما لم تُوجَّه إليه أي اتهامات مرتبطة بالقضية.
في المقابل، يواصل الديمقراطيون داخل اللجنة المطالبة بالاستماع إلى شهادة الرئيس دونالد ترمب بشأن علاقته السابقة بإبستين، بينما يؤكد الجمهوريون أنهم لم يعثروا على أي أدلة تشير إلى ارتكاب ترمب أي مخالفات خلال فترة صداقته المعلنة مع إبستين.
American billionaire Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, is set to appear today (Wednesday) before a congressional oversight committee to investigate files related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, becoming the latest prominent figure to testify in a case that continues to stir widespread controversy in the United States.
Members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee are scheduled to conduct a closed interview with Gates, similar to previous hearings held with several witnesses, with the transcripts of the testimony to be published later, according to established procedures.
Committee Chairman Republican James Comer had formally requested Gates to testify after his name appeared multiple times in a set of documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of its investigations related to Epstein.
The documents reveal a wide network of relationships that Epstein cultivated with influential figures in technology, finance, politics, and other sectors. Although all the names mentioned in the files deny any involvement in the crimes attributed to him, some maintained relationships or friendships with him even after his record related to sexual assaults became public.
The documents include dates of meetings between Gates and Epstein, emails exchanged regarding charitable projects, as well as photos taken of them during events they attended together.
According to the documents, the professional relationship between the two men began in 2011, three years after Epstein pleaded guilty to a charge related to soliciting a minor for prostitution, and continued at least until late 2014.
In 2019, Epstein was charged with federal offenses of sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit those crimes.
The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed at the time that he had established a wide network of underage girls, some of whom were not yet 14 years old, and sexually exploited them between 2002 and 2005. Epstein committed suicide in his jail cell in 2019 before his trial began.
No charges have been brought against Bill Gates related to the Epstein case, and he has denied any knowledge of the abuses committed by Epstein against the girls, repeatedly stating that their meetings were limited to discussions about charitable and humanitarian work, describing his association with Epstein as a “grave mistake.”
Both Gates and his ex-wife Melinda French Gates have previously acknowledged that his relationship with Epstein caused tensions in their marriage.
Last February, the Gates Foundation admitted that a limited number of its employees met with Epstein after he claimed he could raise significant financial resources to support global health projects, and the foundation confirmed that it did not establish any joint charitable fund with him nor made any financial payments to him.
As part of the review of this relationship, the foundation’s CEO Mark Suzman commissioned an independent entity to conduct an external assessment of the foundation’s previous ties to Epstein.
Gates’ testimony comes months after a closed hearing that former President Bill Clinton underwent, where he spent over 6 hours answering lawmakers’ questions about his relationship with Epstein over two decades ago.
Records showed that Epstein visited the White House several times during Clinton’s presidency, and the latter sometimes traveled on the late financier’s private plane.
During his testimony, Clinton confirmed that he did not notice any signs of Epstein’s criminal behavior and that he cut ties with him years before Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008, and he has not faced any charges related to the case.
In contrast, Democrats on the committee continue to call for hearing testimony from former President Donald Trump regarding his previous relationship with Epstein, while Republicans assert that they have found no evidence indicating that Trump committed any wrongdoing during his publicly acknowledged friendship with Epstein.
