The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the disabling of a commercial cargo ship flying the Panama flag in the Gulf of Oman, following an airstrike carried out by a U.S. fighter jet, after its crew ignored repeated warnings and attempted to bypass the maritime blockade imposed on Iran, confirming that there were no injuries among the crew members.
CENTCOM clarified in a statement that a U.S. military fighter jet used precision munitions to target the stern of the ship “Ocean Molika,” also known as “Erika Sun,” which led to the complete disabling of its propulsion system and prevented it from continuing its voyage.
Ignoring Repeated Warnings
CENTCOM stated that the ship was attempting to cross into territorial waters after leaving one of the Iranian ports, despite its crew receiving repeated warnings regarding the U.S. maritime blockade. It confirmed that the operation targeted the ship’s ability to move, without causing harm to its crew members, while an independent statement from the operating company regarding the circumstances of the incident was not immediately available.
Disabling 4 Ships and Returning 135 Others
The U.S. Central Command revealed that its forces re-imposed the maritime blockade on ships entering or leaving Iranian ports on July 14. According to the statement, the enforcement of the blockade over the past three months resulted in the disabling of four commercial ships and forced 135 other vessels to change course and return. It added that during the same period, U.S. forces destroyed ten oil tankers that they claimed were linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s maritime transport network. These figures were reported by U.S. command and could not be independently verified.
Warnings for Ships in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz
CENTCOM urged the crews of commercial ships operating in the Gulf of Oman and the routes leading to the Strait of Hormuz to adhere to the warnings issued by U.S. forces, to follow navigational alerts, and to communicate with U.S. naval vessels via maritime communication channel 16. This incident comes amid rising military tensions in the region and increasing risks facing commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.
