While American media reported that Washington is threatening to stop supplying Ukraine with weapons, the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe and NATO’s military operations chief, General Alexus Greenkwich, urged European countries to increase their support for Kyiv.
Greenkwich considered that enhancing military and financial support for Ukraine is an appropriate response to what he described as the increasing Russian hybrid attacks against European countries. He stated that Russia is trying to break the collective will of the alliance member states through activities that include incursions into their airspace, sabotage and arson, and cyberattacks.
He pointed out that increasing military and financial support to Kyiv from countries like Germany and Denmark sends a message to Moscow that its goals will not be achieved, as he put it. He added that these steps contribute to deterring Russian threats to Europe, at a time when Russian forces continue to suffer significant losses in Ukraine.
In the same context, a senior NATO military official stated that Russia suffered more than 50,000 casualties, including up to 28,000 dead, last month, compared to about five thousand casualties among Ukrainian forces. The official explained that the Russian army continues to attempt to achieve territorial gains by pushing its forces into areas where drones, mines, and artillery fire are prevalent, while Ukraine continues to increase pressure on Moscow through attacks targeting vital facilities within Russian territory.
Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported that the administration of President Donald Trump threatened to halt mechanisms for supplying Ukraine with weapons and sharing intelligence with it. The newspaper quoted European officials as saying that American officials had made contacts with Kyiv and several European capitals over the past two days to convey this message, in an attempt to stop the strikes targeting Russian oil refineries. According to the report, the American messages included threats to stop the exchange of intelligence and suspend the operation of the mechanism for purchasing American weapons for Ukraine with European funds, known as the “Ukrainian Priority Needs List.” The newspaper quoted a European official as saying, “They are contacting Kyiv… they are contacting everyone in Europe.” The report noted that the White House did not confirm these communications and did not comment on them.
