As tensions escalate amid the chaos and riots over the past few days, an armed individual opened fire on passersby in the city of Trappes, southwest of the French capital.
A source in the French police announced today, Friday, that an armed man shot and killed one person, injuring four others in the suburbs of Paris. He added that the suspect has been arrested, although the motives for the incident have not yet been revealed, according to the Reuters news agency.
Other sources reported that the attack occurred at 10:30 AM local time in the cities of Trappes and La Verrière, which are part of the Yvelines department in France, where a man in a vehicle unleashed a barrage of bullets towards the main road.
This incident comes despite heightened security measures in the French capital and other cities following the violence and looting witnessed during the protests on October 17. The Paris municipality has urged residents and shop owners to take additional precautions ahead of expected movements tomorrow, Saturday, which included removing objects and equipment from the streets that could be used for vandalism, increasing the presence of municipal police, and canceling some public events.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed yesterday that authorities will ban demonstrations that he described as “illegal” in the coming days, blaming groups from the radical left for the violence and looting that occurred in the country over the past weekend.
The protests were sparked by student demands for improved school conditions, before expanding to include anger over rising living costs, energy prices, and fuel costs, as well as declining purchasing power.
However, these movements have seen clashes and incidents of looting and vandalism targeting shops, public buildings, and vehicles, while authorities reported widespread arrests and injuries among security forces.
The events have raised criticisms regarding the security forces’ ability to contain the unrest, as the violence spread to several French cities.
