Not all book signing events are dependent on the quality of the content or the stature and reputation of the author; the carnival of signings is governed by the number of the author’s followers on social media, the charm of their appearance; and perhaps the openness of their demeanor; and the accompanying lights often prioritize the author’s image over the substance of the book.
Recently, Algerian author Hamid Yassine attended an event in his city dedicated to signing his novel “Ambassador from the Countryside”; he may have had high hopes for the literary scene and expected a crowd of readers to flock to acquire it; however, his wait in the hall was prolonged, and time passed with only the event manager present; unable to contain himself, the author broke down in a fit of tears, and a video clip circulated on social media, which motivated Arab readers to read and share the novel, expressing great sympathy for its seasoned author. This contributed to an increase in the number of followers and a doubling of sales, with some intellectuals confirming that his audience today has grown due to this unintended neglect.
