The Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi emphasized that Egypt will not compromise in protecting the interests of its people and its water security, affirming its rejection of imposing a fait accompli or relinquishing Egyptian water rights.
During his speech at the opening of the ninth session of Cairo Water Week on Sunday, El-Sisi stated: “Egypt has chosen the path of cooperation and dialogue, a conscious choice based on trust in the justice of its cause and the legality of its position, and is convinced that protecting the interests of its people is a responsibility it will not waver in fulfilling.”
He warned that any bet on Egypt accepting the imposition of a fait accompli or compromising its water security is a losing bet.
El-Sisi added: “Every country has the right to development and to benefit from its natural resources, provided that this right is exercised responsibly and without harming other countries or affecting their water security. The existence of the river’s sources within the territory of a state does not grant it the right to unilaterally control a resource shared by multiple peoples.”
He affirmed that Egypt respects and supports the right of all Nile Basin countries to development, pointing out that the practical experience of cooperation with the countries of the Southern Nile Basin has proven that prior notification, exchange of studies, and consultation are practical tools that support mobilizing funding for projects, build trust, and safeguard the interests of all.
El-Sisi indicated that Egypt looks forward to establishing a cooperative approach in the Eastern Nile Basin as well, achieving the interests of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. He stressed that Egypt’s hand is extended to its brothers for cooperation based on the principles of international law, consultation, coordination, and good neighborliness without causing harm, adding: “We are one family united by the Nile, and our common interests are greater than our differences.”
He reiterated the necessity of making water a catalyst for peace and mutual prosperity, transitioning from crisis management to building solutions, and from commitments to implementation.
