The disappearance of an American lawyer undergoing cancer treatment in California raised questions that lasted for months, before investigations led to the discovery of her remains on her farm, and a murder charge was brought against her adopted son, who authorities suspect is also involved in fraud cases and the seizure of her property through forged documents.
San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced that a murder charge has been filed against Cedric von Ferdinand, 34, in connection with the death of lawyer Nadine Jett, 64, who mysteriously disappeared in early 2024.
From Care to Indictment
According to investigations reported by People magazine, von Ferdinand moved in with his adoptive mother in August after she was diagnosed with cancer, stating that he wanted to help her during her treatment journey.
However, investigators suspect that he administered a lethal dose of fentanyl between January 14 and 17, 2024, before burying her body in a hole about two meters deep on her farm in Valley Center.
The last known sighting of Jett was during a chemotherapy session on January 14. After that, the accused, according to the prosecution, began telling people around her that she would not survive the illness and that she wished to have her body cremated without a funeral service.
He also informed one of her caregivers that she had died in Mexico and that her services were no longer needed, a narrative that raised further questions about the lawyer’s fate.
Refusal to Provide a Death Certificate
The threads of the case began to unravel after the accused refused to provide a death certificate for his mother to his adoptive siblings, who also noticed suspicious financial and real estate activities related to her property.
In June 2024, the children reported her disappearance to the authorities, leading to investigations that resulted, in July 2025, in the discovery of her remains on the farm. The coroner later classified the death as a homicide.
Fraud Charges
The case did not stop at the murder charge, as von Ferdinand faces charges of real estate fraud, identity theft, and document forgery, in incidents that authorities say caused losses exceeding $500,000. Charges have also been brought against two other individuals connected to the alleged fraud operations.
The district attorney described the case as a crime driven by greed, pointing out that the accused exploited the victim’s critical health condition, while his attorney, Ashley Mangold, affirmed his insistence on his innocence and his love for his adoptive mother.
Von Ferdinand is scheduled to appear in court on November 5, after a previous hearing set for October 22 was postponed.
