Egyptian parliament member Mustafa Bakri confirmed that the security of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen is interconnected, emphasizing that the security of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is directly linked to Egyptian national security, coinciding with the House of Representatives’ vote to authorize President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi regarding participation in a defensive mission with the Kingdom.
Bakri stated in a post on his official account on the “X” platform that Egypt is defending its security in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait through this move, warning against ignoring the connection between the security of vital maritime routes and Egyptian national security, in light of the threats facing navigation and trade in the region.
He cited a saying that “Egypt’s security begins in the south from the sources of the Nile,” considering that the same logic applies to the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, as they are part of a security system shared by the countries bordering the sea.
The Egyptian parliament member stressed that the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea represents a common interest for Egypt and the neighboring countries, pointing out the strategic importance of maritime routes for the Suez Canal, which is one of the most important sources of Egyptian national income and a main passage for global trade.
In this context, Bakri warned against what he described as attempts to push Egypt to abandon its security responsibilities in the region, stating that those who demand Cairo to relinquish its security have, as he put it, “their malicious objectives.” He also accused an unnamed faction of being an instrument of Iran, referring to regional disputes regarding Tehran and its allies’ role in the area.
Bakri confirmed that the security of Egypt and Saudi Arabia is mutual, stating that any harm that befalls the Kingdom’s territory, especially the holy lands, will have repercussions that extend beyond its borders, affecting Egypt and the entire Islamic world.
The Egyptian MP addressed the Yemeni file, noting that Cairo has repeatedly declared its support for the Yemeni legitimacy, represented by the Presidential Leadership Council headed by Rashad al-Alimi, and emphasized that the security of Yemen is linked to the security of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, given the strategic location of the country overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
These statements come in the context of Egyptian moves to enhance coordination with Saudi Arabia regarding regional security developments, amid fears of an escalation in attacks targeting the Kingdom and the maritime routes near Yemen.
