A Dispute Beyond Photos to Political Issues

Two Catholic bishops in the United States apologized for their participation in a meeting at the White House after photos were published showing them praying with President Donald Trump, in an incident that sparked controversy over the use of religious symbols in political conflict ahead of the midterm elections.

Jeffrey Grob, the Archbishop of Milwaukee, and William Joensen, the Bishop of Des Moines, Iowa, expressed their regret for participating in the meeting that took place last Thursday after the White House released photos and a video of the encounter, which the bishops said they did not consent to being published in this manner.

In a statement titled “Public Apology,” Grob said on Sunday that he received many inquiries and comments regarding the meeting he attended alongside 11 other bishops, and that some of the message senders expressed their strong discontent with the scene in which they appeared with Trump.

The Archbishop of Milwaukee added that he feels “deep sadness,” not only because of the pain the meeting caused some individuals, but also because prayer, as a sacred practice for religious leaders, was used in a way that raised his concerns.

Grob noted that the White House quickly published details of the meeting, accompanied by the photos and video, without obtaining the participants’ consent, less than two weeks before the American midterm elections, raising questions about the use of the meeting in a political and electoral context.

For his part, the Bishop of Des Moines said he believes the White House exploited the bishops for partisan political purposes, expressing regret for not exercising greater caution before participating in the meeting.

Joensen wrote that he wishes he had been “more astute and less naive” regarding those who exploited the meeting for political purposes, adding that he prays to God to be wiser and more deliberate in the future, while at the same time remaining open to communication with political leaders at all levels and praying for them.

In contrast, the White House did not provide a direct answer to a question about whether it obtained the bishops’ consent to publish the photos and videos. Instead, White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers defended Trump’s stance toward Catholics, stating that American Catholics have not seen a better president than him, and that his record proves it.

A Dispute Beyond Photos to Political Issues

According to the bishops, the invitation extended by the White House last September included discussions on issues important to the Catholic Church and its institutions, including the implementation of immigration laws, visas for workers in religious institutions, abortion, and the possibility of using federal tax credits to support private education.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time, ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for November, in which Americans will choose members of the House of Representatives and several senators, along with officials at the state and local levels. The elections are of great importance to the Trump administration, as they will determine the balance of power in Congress and the president’s ability to pass his legislative agenda.

The incident also raises a broader question about the boundaries between legitimate communication between religious institutions and political authorities, and the use of images and religious practices to convey electoral messages. While the bishops see the publication of the photos as placing their participation in a context they did not agree to, the White House did not acknowledge any exploitation, merely defending Trump’s record regarding Catholics.

The bishops did not announce a boycott of communication with the U.S. administration, but Joensen emphasized his commitment to the principle of dialogue with political leaders and praying for them, while stressing the need for caution so that religious meetings do not become tools in partisan struggles.
