Sometimes, laughter has a price higher than gold.. This is what Kylian Mbappé discovered in the peoples and fans of China, as he found himself, just hours after the Ballon d’Or ceremony, facing a hefty bill due to a sarcastic image and a fleeting comment.
A person laughs at their own image, mocks themselves, and thinks that the world shares in the laughter, but the world is vast, and human memory is vaster, and what one person sees as a joke, another may see as an affront to their history and dignity.
Mbappé appeared in an image evoking Mao Zedong, the leader whose name is associated with the founding of modern China, and with very complex pages in its history. The player made a sarcastic comment, and suddenly the joke crossed borders, awakening national sentiments behind it, and major companies moved to terminate their contracts with him, amid a media storm that extended to football itself.
Here, the story seems bigger than a famous player. Mbappé, who is used to making headlines with his feet, discovered that words can score own goals. In a single moment, he had to explain his intent, apologize, and face an audience that sees its symbols as part of its memory and emotions.
Perhaps what deserves the most reflection in this story is that fame gives its owner a subtle feeling that the world is close to them, understands their language, and knows their way of joking. The truth is that every society has its sensitive doors, and every people has its stories that reside in the heart, needing a bit of knowledge before approaching them.
In the fields of sports, every mistake has a penalty that corresponds to it, and every match has a referee who separates the two sides. But in Mbappé’s case, the question remains whether the penalty matched the mistake, or if the whistle of economics was harsher than the whistle of the pitch?
Mbappé paid the price for a fleeting moment, and perhaps he emerged from it with a lesson that will stay with him for a long time. A person sometimes learns from a book, sometimes from a friend, and sometimes from a small mistake that opens doors to the whole world.
As for fame, it has a different story; it turns its owner into a star in the sky, then leaves them alone in front of a word they said on the ground.
