Israel has entered a new phase of political ambiguity following the Knesset elections, which did not grant either of the competing blocs a parliamentary majority, amid the ongoing counting of votes and anticipation of results that may determine the future of the upcoming government, potentially bringing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu back to the forefront of coalition negotiations, despite a decline in his political strength.

The Israeli newspaper “Haaretz” confirmed today (Thursday) that 94% of the votes have been counted, with no change in the announced results. The counting of 91% of the votes showed Netanyahu’s bloc leading with 53 seats, compared to 48 seats for the change bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot, and 19 seats for the Arab parties, with neither bloc able to reach the required majority of 61 seats to form a government.

Preliminary Results of the Israeli Elections

The Israeli Channel 12 reported that the Likud party, led by Netanyahu, topped the results with 26 seats, followed by the “Yesh Atid” party led by Eisenkot with 21 seats, then the “Yamina” party headed by Naftali Bennett with 12 seats, and the Joint Arab List with 11 seats.

The Democratic Party led by Yair Golan and the United Arab List headed by Mansour Abbas each secured 8 seats, while the parties “Yahadut HaTorah,” “Yisrael Beiteinu,” “Shas,” and “Jewish Power” each received 7 seats.

The “Religious Zionism” party led by Bezalel Smotrich obtained 6 seats, leaving the Knesset map without a decisive majority, amid anticipation of the final results and their implications for coalition negotiations.

The remaining votes include those of Israeli soldiers, security forces members, prisoners, and patients in hospitals who were unable to vote at their registered polling stations, with expectations of their impact on parliamentary balances.

A New Arab Equation

American and British newspapers agreed that the increased participation of Palestinian voters in Israel and the record number of seats won by Arab parties have imposed a new political equation that may determine whether Israel will head towards an alternative government or early elections that return the crisis to square one.

The “New York Times” reported that Netanyahu’s supporters felt relieved, as the preliminary results kept his chances of remaining in power alive, while his opponents were disappointed after failing to achieve a decisive victory.

The newspaper explained that the scene places the opposition in front of difficult choices, including cooperating with Arab parties to form a minority government or entering negotiations with other parties, amid internal divisions and hardline positions against alliances with representatives of Arab citizens.

Israeli political circles are awaiting the final results, as the negotiations to form the government seem contingent on the competing blocs’ ability to overcome their differences and secure parliamentary support that ensures the survival of the upcoming government or opens the door to new elections.

The Israeli newspaper “Yedioth Ahronoth” quoted the leader of the “Yisrael Beiteinu” party, Avigdor Lieberman, confirming his refusal to participate in a government with Benjamin Netanyahu or the head of the Joint Arab List, Ahmad Tibi.

Weariness with Netanyahu in Washington

The “Politico” website quoted a former official in President Donald Trump’s administration saying that the victory of the Israeli opposition in the elections would have constituted “an opportunity to stop the bleeding by governing Israel in a less provocative manner,” adding that there is “a sense of weariness” towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.
