The luxurious palace in Madrid no longer protects its owners after the Interpol pursuits ignited. Thus, the “Spanish baron” Juan Carlos, famously known by the nickname “Moreno,” found himself transferred from a life of luxury to a cramped cell in the Moroccan city of Tangier, after a months-long escape to evade relentless security forces.
The man who managed a cross-border empire for smuggling hashish from the Moroccan coasts to the Spanish and European depths employed highly deceptive methods to hide his illicit wealth, including receiving a fictitious monthly salary of no more than 5,000 euros as a supposed employee at a printing company he never visited, while drug money was funneled into fraudulent loans and luxurious real estate.
However, the threads of his network began to unravel gradually since 2025 after security agencies monitored his encrypted communications, culminating in the baron’s acrobatics ending this October with his arrest in Tangier during a massive operation that resulted in the dismantling of seven secret warehouses, the seizure of more than 10 tons of hashish, and the arrest of 86 individuals involved in a single network.
