The conductor of the orchestra, Maestro Majd, revealed in an interview with the newspaper the behind-the-scenes preparations for the two concerts held as part of the Riyadh Season activities, including the selection of musicians, rehearsal arrangements, and the details that preceded the performance on stage.
Like a Dream
Majd confirmed in press statements that leading the orchestra during the “Return of the Absent” concerts felt like a dream, noting that his emotions were too great to be expressed in words.
He said: “It was an incredible feeling that cannot be described, like a dream. The emotions were overflowing to the utmost extent, and I felt like I was flying from sheer joy, especially when I met Fadl Shaker and we rehearsed, then he sang while I played, with the orchestra performing.”
Behind the Scenes of the Concert
He added: “When I spoke with Fadl Shaker about the preparations, he told me that he wanted a world-class band, saying: ‘I want the most beautiful orchestra in the world.’ This statement affected me greatly, so I decided to actually present him with a world-class musical ensemble,” pointing out that the orchestra included 85 musicians from ten nationalities, including Lebanese, Syrian, Jordanian, Iraqi, Egyptian, Turkish, Greek, Brazilian, Russian, and American.
Preparation and Readiness
Maestro Majd explained that he began preparations a month before the first concert in Riyadh, in a process that involved not only selecting musicians but also arranging the compositions and organizing communication among the band members to ensure harmony between the various musical sections.
He said: “The level of professionalism and precision among the musicians was remarkable, to the extent that I felt as if they had been playing together for many years, despite their different nationalities and musical backgrounds, as they made sure to practice individually before the group meetings, which contributed to speeding up the work and achieving the required harmony.”
140 Musical Notes
Majd confirmed that he prepared about 60 to 70 songs for string instruments, along with a similar number of notes for solo instruments that perform the main melody, bringing the total he worked on to around 120 to 140 musical notes.
An Unforgettable Moment
Among the moments that remained etched in Majd’s memory was Fadl Shaker’s expression of feeling nervous before the concerts. The maestro believes that this statement reflects the artist’s humility, but it does not align with what he observed on stage in terms of presence and mastery. He said: “What struck me the most was when Fadl Shaker said he felt nervous; I think this statement reflects his humility, but I saw the exact opposite on stage. Fadl is an extraordinary artist.”
He continued: “Returning after 14 years of absence, in front of this large audience, amidst massive preparations and an orchestra of this size, and then delivering a performance at this level is something that no artist can achieve easily, especially given the circumstances he has gone through.”
