The inconclusive results of the Israeli elections have dashed hopes within Washington for a quick reset of U.S.-Israeli relations, which have seen increasing strain and tension across party affiliations during Benjamin Netanyahu’s long tenure as Prime Minister of Israel.

Despite the strong public support that U.S. President Donald Trump has shown for Netanyahu, some factions within the U.S. administration, along with figures from both the Republican and Democratic parties in Congress, hoped for a victory for the Israeli opposition and the beginning of addressing the deterioration they attribute to Netanyahu’s policies.

According to Politico, a former Trump administration official commented on the prevailing atmosphere in Washington following the election results, stating that the arrival of a less provocative government could have provided an opportunity to halt the decline in relations, adding that there is a sense of political fatigue towards Netanyahu within the United States.

The criticisms directed at the Israeli government span various political spectrums, including moderate and progressive Democrats, as well as prominent officials in the Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance, alongside sectors of the base supporting the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, which opposes U.S. involvement in foreign wars.

Election Results Keep Netanyahu in Power Temporarily

The partial election results, as of (Wednesday), showed that neither Netanyahu’s Likud party and its allies nor the opposition party “Yashar,” led by Gadi Eisenkot and his partners, were able to secure the majority required in the Knesset, which consists of 120 seats.

This political deadlock paves the way for weeks, if not months, of negotiations between parties to form a government coalition. If the political forces fail to reach an agreement, Israel may be forced to hold new elections.

This situation means that Netanyahu will continue to manage the government during the negotiation phase, coinciding with the United States’ preparation for the midterm congressional elections, which may allow him to maintain his political influence for a longer period, despite the declining support for his policies among segments of Americans.

Netanyahu, who has served as Prime Minister of Israel at various times since the 1990s, is the political face of several policies that face criticism within the United States, particularly the war in Gaza, the dispute over the disarmament plan for Hamas, and his role in pushing for military confrontation with Iran.

American Division on the War with Iran

Disagreements are escalating in Washington regarding Netanyahu’s role in shaping U.S. policy towards Iran, as some Democratic lawmakers view the Israeli Prime Minister as an obstacle to ending U.S. involvement in the war.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy stated during an event organized by the Middle East Institute (Wednesday) that Netanyahu’s re-election would make him a significant voice to Trump in continuing the push for regime change in Iran.

Conversely, Netanyahu still retains allies in Congress, including Republican Senator Ted Cruz, chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, and Democratic Senator John Fetterman.

Trump also reaffirmed on (Wednesday) his support for Netanyahu, considering that his backing helped the Israeli Prime Minister avoid a clear loss in the elections, despite the fact that Netanyahu has angered the U.S. President on previous occasions, even calling him “crazy” at one point.

Trump Prefers Continuation of the Relationship.. But Seeks a More Cooperative Government

According to a former White House official still in contact with Trump’s inner circle, the U.S. President’s support for Netanyahu is linked to their personal relationship, alongside political and strategic considerations.

The official stated that supporting Netanyahu ensures the continuation of the relationship with a known ally, should the Likud party manage to exceed expectations once again, adding that any new Prime Minister, whether Eisenkot or another, will need Trump’s support to introduce themselves to the United States and the international community.

However, some pro-Israel Republicans may prefer a change within the Israeli government without completely ousting Netanyahu, by forming a national unity government that excludes the more hardline figures in his current cabinet, namely Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

Both ministers face criticism for their policies towards Palestinians; Smotrich has pushed for accelerating the construction of settlements designated for Jews in the West Bank, while Ben Gvir has ordered the imposition of strict detention conditions on Palestinians in Israeli prisons, and both have supported what they termed “voluntary migration” of Palestinians from Gaza.

According to the report, Netanyahu proposed the idea of forming a national unity government during communications with the White House, but Eisenkot rejected the proposal.

Another former official in the Trump administration believed that the White House might prefer a more cooperative Israeli government aligned with its current inclinations, considering that the presence of Smotrich and Ben Gvir could undermine several of Trump’s perceptions regarding achieving peace in the Middle East, and noted that addressing this issue might be possible even with Netanyahu remaining in office.

Declining Popular Support for Israel Raises Concerns for Both Parties

Criticism in Washington is no longer limited to Netanyahu’s personal performance, as the distinction between his leadership and Israeli policies has become more challenging, according to former U.S. officials.

Dan Shapiro, the former U.S. ambassador to Israel during the Obama administration, stated that the decline in Israel’s standing among American public opinion has become evident in polls across various demographic groups, especially among the youth, noting that a significant portion of negative attitudes is linked to Netanyahu.

Among the main sources of disagreement is the Israeli war on Gaza, which erupted following Hamas’s attack in October 2023, in addition to Netanyahu’s rejection of a Trump-backed plan to disarm Hamas and his support for the continuation of confrontation with Iran.

Vance Reveals the Widening Rift Among Republicans

The division over Israel extends to the Republican Party itself, which is facing increasing criticism among segments of young voters, including some conservative supporters who oppose continued U.S. involvement in foreign wars.

A former Trump administration official stated that Netanyahu has become an easy target for conservative political commentators and content creators due to his name being associated with regional developments that some of these voters reject.

Eisenkot Does Not Guarantee a Radical Change in Israeli Policies

Although some U.S. officials view Eisenkot as a potentially more cautious alternative in making war decisions, his ascension to the Prime Ministership will not necessarily guarantee a restoration of Israel’s image among American public opinion.

Eisenkot has four decades of military experience and previously served as the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces during Netanyahu’s tenure.

A former U.S. military official believes that his personality tends towards contemplation and studying options, and that he may prefer to reduce the objectives of wars before launching new large-scale military campaigns.

However, Eisenkot has also pledged to eliminate Hamas’s rule within 18 months and has ruled out the establishment of a Palestinian state, despite his commitment to addressing settler violence and implementing Trump’s peace plan in Gaza.

He also reminded voters that he lost his son and two of his nephews in Gaza during the war, stating that there is no one in Israel, as he put it, who wants to destroy Hamas more than he does.

The Future of Military Aid Depends on Political Balances

Netanyahu’s continued rule may increase pressure within the Democratic Party to take action against the Israeli government, such as halting arms sales or tightening oversight of Israeli policies in the West Bank and Gaza.

Such moves could escalate if Democrats manage to gain control of one or both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections. However, the ability of these actions to effect real change will remain tied to legislative balances, as well as the U.S. President’s authority to veto certain decisions.

Thus, U.S.-Israeli disagreements may persist even if the government in Tel Aviv changes, given the differing positions on Iran, the war in Gaza, settlements, and the future of Palestinians.

Amid the stalled formation of the Israeli government, the American division over the relationship with Tel Aviv, and the ongoing disagreements over Iran and Gaza, relations between Washington and Israel appear to be heading into a phase of uncertainty, the trajectory of which depends not only on the identity of the Prime Minister but also on the nature of the policies that the next government will adopt and the willingness of both parties to rearrange their priorities.
