The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, today (Saturday), held the Houthi militia responsible for the death of Al-Shami in its prisons, calling for an urgent, independent, and transparent investigation, the disclosure of medical and detention records, and accountability for those involved in any violations.
Turk stated in a statement that the death of Mohammed Al-Shami, an employee of the UN Human Rights Commission in Yemen, while in detention by the Houthis, represents a tragic loss, emphasizing that his family has not yet received any explanation for the cause or circumstances of his death and deserves to know the truth.
He clarified that Al-Shami had been arbitrarily detained by Houthi authorities since June 6, 2024, and that he died more than a month ago, according to information received by the commission from his family, who were only recently informed of his death.
The High Commissioner demanded that the Houthi militia fully disclose the circumstances of the death, make all relevant medical and detention records available, preserve evidence, and subject any announced causes of death to independent scrutiny, stressing the need for accountability for any violations.
Turk expressed deep concern for the safety of the remaining UN staff in detention, including seven employees from his office, as well as humanitarian workers and civil society personnel, reiterating his call for their immediate and unconditional release.
He emphasized the necessity of ensuring the safety of detainees and their proper treatment, providing them with necessary medical care, enabling them to communicate with their families, and allowing the UN to visit them until their release.
The High Commissioner warned that this case raises deep concerns about the safety of UN staff and the conditions that allow the organization to continue its presence and perform its tasks in areas under Houthi control, affirming that the detention of UN workers undermines the organization’s ability to support the Yemeni people amid the severe humanitarian and human rights crisis facing the country.
