دفعت مدخرات تقاعدها مقابل حلم العيش في رحلة بحرية لا تنتهي، وباعت فكرة قضاء سنواتها المقبلة متنقلة بين موانئ العالم، لكنها وجدت نفسها أمام خسارة مالية قاسية قبل أن تصعد إلى السفينة من الأساس.. هكذا انتهت آمال معلمة أسترالية متقاعدة في حياة الرفاهية البحرية، بعدما توقفت شركة الرحلة الفاخرة عن العمل بصورة مفاجئة، تاركة مئات الركاب أمام مصير مجهول.
وتواجه ليزا ماكاي، المقيمة في مدينة بريسبان الأسترالية، صدمة مالية ونفسية وصفتها ب«المدمرة»، بعد خسارة 63.5 ألف دولار سحبتها من مدخراتها التقاعدية لحجز مكان على متن السفينة السكنية الفاخرة «فيلا في أوديسي»، التي كانت تروج لها الشركة المشغلة باعتبارها تجربة إقامة بحرية طويلة الأمد.
وكانت ماكاي تستعد للالتحاق بالسفينة خلال نوفمبر، عبر محطة كوالالمبور، قبل أن تتلقى أنباء توقف المشروع وانهيار خطة الرحلة، في وقت كانت فيه الشركة قد أوقفت عملياتها وعجزت عن مواصلة تغطية نفقات التشغيل.
وبدأت الأزمة تتكشف في 27 أكتوبر، عندما طُلب من أكثر من 200 راكب مغادرة السفينة فورًا في ميناء سيهانوكفيل بكمبوديا، بعد إعلان شركة «فيلا في ريزيدنسز» الأمريكية عدم قدرتها على مواصلة تشغيل المشروع وتحمل تكاليفه.
وكانت السفينة قد انطلقت من بلفاست في أيرلندا الشمالية عام 2024، ضمن رحلة حول العالم كان مقررًا أن تستمر ثلاث سنوات ونصف السنة، واستقطبت أشخاصًا من جنسيات مختلفة، قرر بعضهم بيع ممتلكاتهم والاستثمار في حياة دائمة على متنها، قبل أن تتوقف الرحلة بعد نحو عامين فقط من انطلاقها.
وقالت ماكاي، في تصريحات لشبكة «إيه بي سي نيوز»، إنها حولت 63.5 ألف دولار من مدخراتها التقاعدية مباشرة إلى حساب الشركة، مؤكدة أن خسارة هذا المبلغ تمثل ضربة كبيرة لها، خصوصًا مع ضآلة فرص استرداده، في ظل عدم شمول وثيقة تأمين السفر لهذا النوع من السفن السياحية الخاصة.
وكشفت أنها ساورتها شكوك بشأن المشروع قبل موعد انطلاقها، بعدما اطلعت على مراجعات وتعليقات سلبية عبر الإنترنت، إلا أن وكيل الحجز بدد مخاوفها من خلال تأكيدات مكتوبة تفيد بإمكانية توفير سفينة بديلة في حال تعذر تنفيذ الرحلة، وهو ما لم يحدث بعد توقف الشركة عن نشاطها بالكامل.
في المقابل، أرجعت شركة «فيلا في ريزيدنسز» قرار وقف عملياتها إلى الارتفاع الحاد في أسعار الوقود، وما فرضه من أعباء مالية قالت إنها جعلت نموذج التشغيل غير قابل للاستمرار.
وقال مؤسس الشركة، ميكائيل بيترسون، لموقع «بيزنس إنسايدر»، إنه يشعر بأسف بالغ إزاء ما حدث، مشيرًا إلى أن تداعيات حرب إيران والتطورات الجيوسياسية أسهمت بصورة مباشرة في تعثر المشروع ماليًا وإجهاض خطط الرحلة.
وتعهد بيترسون بتقديم الدعم الممكن للركاب المتضررين، والعمل على إيجاد حلول لتسوية أوضاعهم، وسط مخاوف من ضياع أموال العملاء الذين دفعوا مبالغ كبيرة مقابل حلم الإقامة الدائمة في البحر.

Lisa Mackay, a resident of Brisbane, Australia, is facing a financial and psychological shock that she described as “devastating,” after losing $63,500 that she withdrew from her retirement savings to reserve a spot on the luxury residential ship “Villa in Odyssey,” which the operating company promoted as a long-term maritime living experience.
Mackay was preparing to join the ship in November, via Kuala Lumpur, before receiving news of the project’s halt and the collapse of the travel plan, at a time when the company had stopped its operations and was unable to continue covering operational expenses.
The crisis began to unfold on October 27, when more than 200 passengers were asked to leave the ship immediately at the port of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, after the American company “Villa in Residences” announced its inability to continue operating the project and bearing its costs.
The ship had set sail from Belfast in Northern Ireland in 2024, as part of a world tour that was scheduled to last three and a half years, attracting people from various nationalities, some of whom decided to sell their properties and invest in a permanent life on board, before the journey was halted after only about two years from its launch.
Mackay stated in remarks to ABC News that she transferred $63,500 from her retirement savings directly to the company’s account, emphasizing that losing this amount represents a significant blow to her, especially with the slim chances of recovering it, given that the travel insurance policy does not cover this type of private cruise ship.
She revealed that she had doubts about the project before its launch date, after reading negative reviews and comments online, but the booking agent alleviated her concerns with written assurances that an alternative ship could be provided if the trip could not be executed, which did not happen after the company ceased all activities.
In contrast, “Villa in Residences” attributed its decision to halt operations to the sharp rise in fuel prices, which imposed financial burdens that it said made the operating model unsustainable.
The company’s founder, Mikael Peterson, told Business Insider that he feels deeply sorry for what happened, noting that the repercussions of the Iran war and geopolitical developments directly contributed to the project’s financial failure and the thwarting of the travel plans.
Peterson pledged to provide possible support to the affected passengers and work on finding solutions to settle their situations, amid fears of losing the money of customers who paid large amounts for the dream of permanent residence at sea.
