Communications have intensified between Iran and Qatari and Pakistani mediators, amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s hint at resorting to military action, and his confirmation that Washington does not condition the change of the Iranian regime to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed today (Monday) that his country does not necessarily need to change the regime in Iran to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump stated in press remarks: “The problem is determining who we can negotiate with in Iran,” adding: “We have not dealt a fatal blow to Iran yet because they want to negotiate with us.”
He pointed out that “the Iranians continue to talk about negotiations, but we may have to end the matter militarily at some point,” indicating that Iran wants to reach an agreement and we will see if that is possible.
He noted that Iran is suffering from a major crisis and is no longer able to pay the salaries of its military forces.
In contrast, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that consultations through the Qatari and Pakistani mediators are very intensive.
Araghchi explained: “Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz are clear, and accepting them will lead to the reopening of the strait and the resumption of dialogue.”
Regarding the internal situation in Iran, Mehr News Agency reported that armed men attacked a vehicle carrying engineers and contractors in Saravan, in Sistan and Baluchestan province, with no casualties reported.
The Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian stated that war would not serve any party’s interests, but he said that his country would not surrender.
He added: “We seek to resolve problems through dialogue, and the leader (Mojtaba Khamenei) has granted the government some powers in this regard.”
The Iranian Navy stated that a fire broke out on an oil tanker after it collided with a naval mine east of the Strait of Hormuz.
