The army announced in a brief statement today, Tuesday, that it shot down an enemy drone using its air defenses in the Blue Nile, which crossed the border from Ethiopia. However, it did not specify the affiliation or type of the drone, nor did it provide additional details about the mission it was carrying out before being shot down.
Yesterday (Monday), the army announced the downing of a drone described as hostile, of the Chinese-made “FH-95” model, in West Kordofan state in the west of the country, amid ongoing clashes with the Rapid Support Forces in Kordofan states.
In light of the successive attacks, the Sudanese government announced (on Sunday) that it would file a complaint against Ethiopia to the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council.
Khartoum accused Addis Ababa of attacking facilities and power stations in several Sudanese states, stating that the drones used in the attacks were launched from Ethiopian territory. There has been no immediate comment from Ethiopian authorities regarding these accusations.
Sudanese authorities and human rights organizations accuse the Rapid Support Forces of targeting civilian facilities during the war, but the latter usually does not comment on these accusations, stating that it works to protect civilians.
Several attacks have targeted power stations in various Sudanese states, raising the number of targeted stations over the week to 16, causing widespread power outages. The most recent of these attacks targeted a power station in the city of Merowe in the northern state yesterday (Monday).
Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a war that erupted over disputes regarding the unification of the military institution, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of about 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
