Portugal national team coach Jorge Jesus revealed the list of new captains for the team, following the announcement of Al Nassr star Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international play yesterday (Thursday).
Ronaldo’s decision came after weeks of his conflict with Jesus and his departure from the Portuguese national team’s camp, before he faced a one-month suspension, along with a fine of 255 euros.
The new captains of the Portugal national team
Jesus said during a press conference: “In the national team, the coach does not choose the team captains; they are determined based on the number of international appearances. Therefore, the player with the most international appearances after Cristiano Ronaldo is Bernardo Silva, followed by Ruben Dias, then Joao Cancelo, Ruben Neves, and finally Bruno Fernandes. This may not be the exact order, but these are the five captains.”
“I don’t feel guilty about Ronaldo’s retirement”
Regarding Ronaldo’s retirement, Jesus said: “Perhaps events unfolded quickly, but Ronaldo’s retirement is not my fault; it would have happened inevitably during my tenure, given the numerous call-ups.”
He added: “I do not feel any guilt regarding Ronaldo’s retirement, and I respect his decision. His history cannot be overlooked; he will remain a symbol, and I have built a strong friendship with him during this recent period.”
An exceptional career
Ronaldo scored 146 goals in 234 matches wearing the Portugal national team jersey, achieving two world records in men’s international football.
He also led his country, known as the “Brazil of Europe,” to win the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League twice.
