Researchers at Moscow State University have developed a new set of chemical compounds that may contribute to the production of more effective drugs for treating fungal infections, particularly those strains that have become resistant to available treatments.
The study included the development of hybrid molecules from azole compounds and tested their ability to combat several pathogenic fungi, including the Candida yeast.
Laboratory experiments showed encouraging results for some compounds, especially in dealing with strains of Candida auris that are difficult to treat due to their resistance to medications. Researchers are currently working on improving the properties of these compounds to enhance their water solubility and develop them for future medical use.
The next phase of the research will focus on studying the efficacy and safety of the compounds, paving the way for identifying the types that can advance to preclinical evaluation stages.
This step comes amid growing interest in combating drug-resistant fungal infections, which pose a health challenge in many countries around the world.
Candida auris is one of the most concerning species in the medical community, having been identified for the first time in 2009 before spreading to various regions around the world and becoming one of the fungi that require special attention due to the difficulty in controlling some of its strains.
