Away from the glitz of fame and the lights of the red carpet, Egyptian star Yasmin Sabri has collided with a harsh reality at the box office, as her new film “Naseeb” has suffered a resounding setback in her first experience as a leading actress, recording a meager revenue of no more than three million pounds over a full ten days of public screening.
The figures that emerged from the backrooms of cinemas (which numbered more than 55 screens, mostly concentrated in the Egyptian capital) showed a lackluster turnout, with daily revenues sometimes not reaching 200,000 pounds. This numerical decline has opened the door wide to critical storms that speculate on the difficulty of achieving solo stardom without the presence of major A-list names, directing sharp criticisms at the stereotypical roles that confine Yasmin Sabri’s appearances to cold aesthetic molds lacking dramatic depth.
The traditional plot of a young woman inheriting a fortune and a luxurious summer resort did not escape the arrows of criticism for its dramatic consumption, while the crises multiplied with the lack of on-screen chemistry with her Syrian partner Moatasem Al-Nahar amid a clear struggle to master the Egyptian dialect, leaving the star of “Naseeb” trapped in existential questions about her ability to salvage her cinematic career and overcome this early test.
