The Under-9 Youth League competitions kicked off today, organized by the Saudi Football Federation for the first time, as part of the project to develop youth and junior competitions, with the participation of 370 teams and the holding of more than 600 matches, aimed at expanding the base of football practice and enhancing opportunities for discovering and developing talents from an early age.
The first edition features the participation of 112 teams from amateur clubs, 186 teams from academies and private clubs, and 72 teams from public clubs, as part of providing opportunities for various sports entities to participate in developing football talents.
The league is held in a 7-a-side format on mini-pitches suitable for the age group, with each match lasting 15 minutes, while each team plays four matches daily on the same pitch, aimed at increasing playing time and developing players’ technical skills and decision-making abilities, with a focus on enjoying the game away from the results.
On the organizational side, 370 supervisors from various regions of the Kingdom have been trained to oversee the matches, while the Referees Committee of the Saudi Football Federation has qualified 998 referees with an average age of 15 years, through courses and training programs held in 15 cities.
The matches are managed by one central referee, while the Referees Committee plans to conduct evaluative visits during next February to select outstanding referees and nominate them to officiate competitions for age categories from under-15 to under-18.
The launch of the league is part of the project to develop youth and junior competitions, which includes seven age categories: under-5, under-7, under-9, under-11, under-12, under-13, and under-14, aimed at increasing the number of practitioners, developing talents early, and qualifying technical and refereeing staff, ultimately supporting national teams.
The competitions for the under-5 and under-7 categories are set to begin in the coming weeks, for the first time as part of the project.
