فيما أعلن عن تشكيل الحكومة اليمنية الجديدة، أمس (الجمعة)، برئاسة الدكتور شائع الزنداني، والتي ضمت وجوهاً جديدة وشابة، جاء تعيين اللواء الركن طاهر علي عيضة العقيلي وزيراً للدفاع، بمثابة خطوة نحو تعزيز الاحترافية المؤسسية في وزارة الدفاع، مع التركيز على توحيد القرار العسكري، وإعادة بناء المنظومة الدفاعية، ورفع جاهزيتها القتالية.
وينحدر اللواء طاهر العقيلي من قرية العقيلي في مديرية بني صريم بمحافظة عمران شمالي اليمن، ويعد أحد القيادات العسكرية المخضرمة، وعاشر وزير دفاع منذ إعادة تحقيق الوحدة اليمنية عام 1990.
يمتلك مسيرة مهنية تمتد أكثر من 3 عقود في القوات المسلحة، حاصل على دكتوراه في الدراسات الإستراتيجية وماجستير علوم عسكرية وزمالة الدفاع الوطني، ما يجمع بين الخبرة الميدانية والتأهيل الأكاديمي العالي.
شغل العقيلي مواقع قيادية بارزة منها قائد ألوية ميدانية، ومدير عمليات، ثم رئيس هيئة الأركان العامة، وأشرف على إدارة العمليات المشتركة وإعادة تنظيم القوات في عدة جبهات. وتولى مهمات تدريب وتأهيل ضباط في الأكاديميات العسكرية.
التحق اللواء العقيلي بالخدمة العسكرية عام 1984، وحصل على شهادة بكالوريوس في العلوم العسكرية عام 1992، وشهادة الدكتوراه في الدراسات الإستراتيجية والفلسفة القومية، وماجستير في الدراسات العليا الإستراتيجية من جامعة كرري بالسودان، وماجستير في العلوم العسكرية من كلية القيادة والأركان في عام 2005، وزمالة كلية الدفاع الوطني من جمهورية السودان عام 2014.
حصل على شهادة دبلوم فن التفاوض وإدارة الأزمات من الأكاديمية العسكرية العليا بصنعاء. وهو خريج دورة قادة كتائب 2001، وحاصل على دبلوم فني صواريخ أرض-جو.
تقلد اللواء العقيلي عدة مناصب عسكرية مهمة، شملت: قائد سرية، عمليات كتيبة، رئيس أركان كتيبة، قائد كتيبة، ومعلم في كلية القيادة والأركان.
وشغل منصب رئيس شعبة، ومدرس أول جناح الدفاع الجوي بكلية القيادة والأركان، ثم قائد اللواء 9 مشاة بالمنطقة العسكرية السادسة بمحافظة الجوف عام 2016.
عُين في منصب رئيس هيئة الأركان العامة للجيش اليمني في 4 سبتمبر 2017، ثم عين مطلع نوفمبر 2018 مستشاراً للقائد الأعلى، وعين نائباً لرئيس اللجنة العسكرية والأمنية العليا المساندة لمجلس القيادة الرئاسي المشكلة في أبريل 2022 والتي كانت مكلفة بهيكلة القوات والتشكيلات العسكرية والأمنية المنضوية ضمن معسكر المجلس الرئاسي.
وتعرض العقيلي لإصابة عام 2018 إثر انفجار لغم أرضي أثناء تفقده سير المعارك في محافظة الجوف.
As the new Yemeni government was announced yesterday (Friday), led by Dr. Sha’if Al-Zandani, which included new and young faces, the appointment of Major General Taher Ali Aida Al-Aqeeli as Minister of Defense was seen as a step towards enhancing institutional professionalism in the Ministry of Defense, focusing on unifying military decision-making, rebuilding the defense system, and increasing its combat readiness.
Major General Taher Al-Aqeeli hails from the village of Al-Aqeeli in the Bani Sarim district of Amran Governorate in northern Yemen, and is considered one of the seasoned military leaders, being the tenth Minister of Defense since the re-establishment of Yemeni unity in 1990.
He has a professional career spanning over three decades in the armed forces, holding a PhD in strategic studies, a Master’s in military sciences, and a National Defense Fellowship, combining field experience with high academic qualifications.
Al-Aqeeli has held prominent leadership positions including field brigade commander, operations director, and then Chief of General Staff, overseeing joint operations management and reorganizing forces on several fronts. He has also been responsible for training and qualifying officers at military academies.
Al-Aqeeli joined military service in 1984 and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in military sciences in 1992, a PhD in strategic studies and national philosophy, a Master’s in advanced strategic studies from Karrari University in Sudan, a Master’s in military sciences from the Command and Staff College in 2005, and a National Defense College Fellowship from the Republic of Sudan in 2014.
He received a diploma in negotiation skills and crisis management from the Higher Military Academy in Sana’a. He is a graduate of the Battalion Commanders Course 2001 and holds a technical diploma in surface-to-air missiles.
Major General Al-Aqeeli has held several important military positions, including: Company Commander, Battalion Operations, Battalion Chief of Staff, Battalion Commander, and Instructor at the Command and Staff College.
He served as Head of Division and Senior Instructor of the Air Defense Wing at the Command and Staff College, then as Commander of the 9th Infantry Brigade in the Sixth Military Region in Al-Jawf Governorate in 2016.
He was appointed as the Chief of General Staff of the Yemeni Army on September 4, 2017, and then appointed in early November 2018 as an advisor to the Supreme Commander, and was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Higher Military and Security Committee supporting the Presidential Leadership Council formed in April 2022, which was tasked with restructuring the military and security forces under the Presidential Council.
Al-Aqeeli was injured in 2018 due to an explosion from a landmine while inspecting the progress of battles in Al-Jawf Governorate.
