أحبطت شرطة الكابيتول الأمريكية محاولة اقتحام مسلح محتملة لمبنى الكونغرس في واشنطن العاصمة يوم الثلاثاء، بعد اعتقال شاب يبلغ من العمر 18 عاماً كان يركض من سيارته باتجاه الجانب الغربي من المبنى وهو يحمل بندقية محملة بالذخيرة.
ووفقاً لبيان رسمي من شرطة الكابيتول ورئيسها مايكل سوليفان، وقع الحادث بعد الظهر مباشرة، حيث ركن الشاب الذي تم التعرف عليه باسم كارتر كاماتشو من مدينة سميرنا بولاية جورجيا سيارة مرسيدس SUV بيضاء في منطقة قريبة من شارع ماريلاند أفينيو، ثم خرج منها وبدأ في الركض لمسافة عدة مئات من الياردات نحو الجانب الغربي للمبنى وهو يحمل السلاح.
وأوقفت الشرطة الشاب قبل وصوله إلى المبنى، وأمرتْه بإلقاء السلاح، فامتثل فوراً واستلقى على الأرض، ثم تم اعتقاله دون وقوع إصابات أو إطلاق نار، وأكدت الشرطة أنه لم يكن هناك تهديد مستمر أو مشتبه بهم آخرين.
وأوضح قائد شرطة الكابيتول أن الدافع وراء الحادث قيد التحقيق، بما في ذلك ما إذا كان أعضاء الكونجرس هم الهدف، مشيرا إلى أن الشرطة لديها تسجيلات فيديو لكنه طلب من الجمهور تزويده بأي تسجيلات فيديو قد تكون لديهم تتعلق بالحادث.
وكان كاماتشو يرتدي سترة تكتيكية وقفازات، وكان يحمل ذخيرة إضافية، كما عُثر في السيارة على خوذة كيفلار وقناع غاز، حيث وجهت له السلطات تهماً تشمل أنشطة غير قانونية، وحمل بندقية بدون ترخيص، وحيازة سلاح غير مسجل، وحيازة ذخيرة غير مسجلة.
يأتي الحادث في سياق حساسية أمن مبنى الكابيتول بعد أحداث 6 يناير 2021، حيث اقتحم مؤيدون للرئيس السابق دونالد ترمب المبنى، مما أدى إلى تعزيز الإجراءات الأمنية بشكل كبير، بما في ذلك حواجز حديدية دائمة، كاميرات مراقبة متقدمة، وانتشار قوات شرطة ووحدات خاصة.
ورغم أن الكونغرس لم يكن في جلسة يوم الحادث، إلا أن المنطقة كانت مفتوحة جزئياً للزوار والسياح، مما يجعل سرعة استجابة الشرطة عاملاً حاسماً في منع كارثة محتملة.
The U.S. Capitol Police thwarted a potential armed breach of the Congress building in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, after arresting an 18-year-old who was running from his car towards the west side of the building while carrying a loaded rifle.
According to an official statement from the Capitol Police and its chief, Michael Sullivan, the incident occurred shortly after noon, when the young man, identified as Carter Camacho from Smyrna, Georgia, parked a white Mercedes SUV in an area near Maryland Avenue, then exited and began running several hundred yards towards the west side of the building while carrying the weapon.
The police stopped the young man before he reached the building and ordered him to drop the weapon, to which he complied immediately and lay down on the ground. He was then arrested without injuries or gunfire, and the police confirmed that there was no ongoing threat or other suspects.
The Capitol Police chief explained that the motive behind the incident is under investigation, including whether members of Congress were the target, noting that the police have video recordings but requested the public to provide any video footage they may have related to the incident.
Camacho was wearing a tactical vest and gloves, and was carrying additional ammunition. A Kevlar helmet and a gas mask were also found in the vehicle, and authorities charged him with illegal activities, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of an unregistered weapon, and possession of unregistered ammunition.
The incident comes in the context of heightened security sensitivity at the Capitol following the events of January 6, 2021, when supporters of former President Donald Trump breached the building, leading to significantly enhanced security measures, including permanent iron barriers, advanced surveillance cameras, and the deployment of police forces and special units.
Although Congress was not in session on the day of the incident, the area was partially open to visitors and tourists, making the police’s rapid response a crucial factor in preventing a potential disaster.
