كشفت شركة OpenAI، المطوّرة لروبوت الدردشة ChatGPT، أنها درست العام الماضي إمكانية إبلاغ الشرطة الكندية بشأن نشاط حساب يعود لشخص ارتكب لاحقًا واحدة من أسوأ عمليات إطلاق النار في تاريخ المدارس الكندية.
وأوضحت الشركة، أنها رصدت في يونيو الماضي حسابًا باسم جيسي فان روتسيلار ضمن جهودها لرصد إساءة الاستخدام، بسبب ما وصفته بـ«الترويج لأنشطة عنيفة»، ودرست حينها إحالة المعلومات إلى الشرطة الملكية الكندية، لكنها خلصت إلى أن النشاط لم يصل إلى مستوى يستدعي الإبلاغ عن خطر وشيك، كما حظرت الحساب في يونيو 2025 لانتهاكه سياسات الاستخدام.
تفاصيل الهجوم
وكان الشاب، البالغ من العمر 18 عامًا، أقدم الأسبوع الماضي في 10 فبراير على قتل ثمانية أشخاص في منطقة نائية بمقاطعة بريتيش كولومبيا، قبل أن ينهي حياته بإطلاق النار على نفسه.
وذكرت الشرطة الملكية الكندية أن المنفذ قتل أولًا والدته وزوج والدته داخل منزل العائلة، ثم هاجم مدرسة قريبة، وأشارت إلى أن لديه سجلًا سابقًا من التواصل مع الشرطة لأسباب تتعلق بالصحة النفسية، فيما لا يزال الدافع وراء الجريمة غير واضح.
وبحسب وكالة أسوشيتد برس، أكد الرقيب كريس كلارك، في بيان عبر البريد الإلكتروني، أن التحقيق يشمل مراجعة شاملة للمحتوى الموجود على الأجهزة الإلكترونية، إضافة إلى الأنشطة على وسائل التواصل والمنصات الإلكترونية، مع جمع الأدلة الرقمية والمادية وتحليلها بشكل منهجي.

بدورها، أوضحت OpenAI أن معيار الإبلاغ إلى جهات إنفاذ القانون يعتمد على وجود خطر وشيك وموثوق بوقوع أذى جسدي خطير للآخرين، وأشارت إلى أنها لم ترصد، في ذلك الوقت، تخطيطًا وشيكًا أو تهديدًا ذا مصداقية.
وأضاف متحدث باسم الشركة: «قلوبنا مع جميع المتضررين من مأساة تامبلر ريدج، لقد بادرنا بالتواصل مع الشرطة الملكية الكندية وتزويدهم بمعلومات حول استخدام الشخص لـChatGPT، وسنواصل دعم التحقيق».
ضحايا وموقع الهجوم
وكانت وقعت المأساة في بلدة تامبلر ريدج الصغيرة، التي يبلغ عدد سكانها نحو 2700 نسمة، وتقع في جبال الروكي الكندية على بعد أكثر من ألف كيلومتر شمال شرق فانكوفر قرب حدود مقاطعة ألبرتا.
وأفادت الشرطة بأن من بين الضحايا مساعدة تدريس تبلغ من العمر 39 عامًا وخمسة طلاب تتراوح أعمارهم بين 12 و13 عامًا.
ويُعد هذا الهجوم الأكثر دموية في كندا منذ عام 2020، عندما قتل مسلح 13 شخصًا في نوفا سكوشا وأضرم حرائق أسفرت عن وفاة تسعة آخرين.
المسؤولية الرقمية
وأعادت الحادثة فتح النقاش حول حدود مسؤولية شركات التكنولوجيا في رصد ومنع الاستخدامات الخطرة للذكاء الاصطناعي، والموازنة بين حماية الخصوصية والتدخل المبكر عند الاشتباه بتهديدات محتملة.
ومع استمرار التحقيقات، يترقب الرأي العام نتائج مراجعة الأدلة الرقمية لمعرفة ما إذا كان بالإمكان منع الكارثة، وما إذا كانت آليات الإبلاغ الحالية بحاجة إلى تشديد أو تحديث.
OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT chatbot, revealed that it studied last year the possibility of notifying the Canadian police about an account belonging to a person who later committed one of the worst school shootings in Canadian history.
The company explained that it detected an account named Jesse Van Rotselaar in June as part of its efforts to monitor abuse, due to what it described as “promoting violent activities,” and at that time considered referring the information to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. However, it concluded that the activity did not reach a level that warranted reporting an imminent threat, and it banned the account in June 2025 for violating usage policies.
Details of the Attack
The young man, 18 years old, carried out the attack last week on February 10, killing eight people in a remote area of British Columbia before ending his life by shooting himself.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported that the perpetrator first killed his mother and his mother’s partner inside the family home, then attacked a nearby school. They noted that he had a previous record of communication with the police for mental health-related reasons, while the motive behind the crime remains unclear.
According to the Associated Press, Sergeant Chris Clark confirmed in a statement via email that the investigation includes a comprehensive review of the content on electronic devices, in addition to activities on social media and online platforms, along with the systematic collection and analysis of digital and physical evidence.
OpenAI’s Position
For its part, OpenAI clarified that the reporting standard to law enforcement depends on the existence of a credible and imminent threat of serious physical harm to others, and noted that it did not detect any imminent planning or credible threat at that time.
A spokesperson for the company added: “Our hearts go out to all those affected by the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge. We have reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and provided them with information regarding the individual’s use of ChatGPT, and we will continue to support the investigation.”
Victims and Location of the Attack
The tragedy occurred in the small town of Tumbler Ridge, which has a population of about 2,700, located in the Canadian Rockies over a thousand kilometers northeast of Vancouver near the Alberta border.
The police reported that among the victims was a 39-year-old teaching assistant and five students aged between 12 and 13 years old.
This attack is the deadliest in Canada since 2020, when a gunman killed 13 people in Nova Scotia and set fires that resulted in the deaths of nine others.
Digital Responsibility
The incident has reopened the discussion about the limits of technology companies’ responsibility in monitoring and preventing dangerous uses of artificial intelligence, balancing privacy protection with early intervention when potential threats are suspected.
As investigations continue, public opinion is awaiting the results of the review of digital evidence to determine whether the disaster could have been prevented and whether current reporting mechanisms need to be tightened or updated.
