He was not looking for a championship, nor for a position or title, but for a morsel to satisfy his children’s hunger, and a dignity to preserve what remains of his humanity. When oppression became unbearable and hunger reached a point where he could no longer remain silent, the wise man or mayor of the Al-Salam neighborhood in the city of Rada’a in Al-Bayda Governorate, Saleem Abdulqawi Abdullah Al-Shanai, appeared in recorded videos to unleash a painful cry from the heart of areas controlled by the Houthi militia, revealing a harsh humanitarian suffering and directly accusing the militia leader Abdulmalik Al-Houthi of injustice, corruption, starving Yemenis, and humiliating tribal leaders.
“I Want to Die”.. The Cry of a Man Exhausted by Oppression
With a voice choked with pain and words flowing from a heart burdened by hunger and oppression, Al-Shanai addressed the militia leader saying: “Listen, O Houthi, O oppressor, O corrupt… I want to die in just one minute,” in a shocking expression of the level of despair he had reached, after stating that the militia had stripped him of his dignity and social status, to the point that, despite being a neighborhood mayor, he was worth nothing.
Al-Shanai did not hesitate to describe Abdulmalik Al-Houthi as “the biggest liar and corrupt person in the world,” affirming that he no longer feared death, after his patience reached its limit.
Women Searching for Food in Garbage Bins
Perhaps the most painful aspect of Al-Shanai’s recordings was his talk about Yemeni women driven by hunger to search for food in garbage bins, in a scene he said could no longer be tolerated in silence.
He urged free Yemenis to feel the magnitude of the tragedy that women and hungry families are living, emphasizing that he did not come out just to speak about his personal suffering, but in defense of every Yemeni exhausted by hunger, and every woman forced by necessity to search for a morsel of food among the waste.
My Children Are Hungry.. and Patience Has Reached Its Limit
For Al-Shanai, hunger was not just a story he heard about others, but a pain he lived within his home; he revealed that his children were starving, and that he had endured his harsh conditions until “patience reached its limit,” as he put it.
He said he had started experiencing dizziness from extreme hunger, explaining that distress and need were what drove him to go out and speak publicly, regardless of the consequences or accusations he might face.
“We Are Not Slaves”.. Yemenis Were Born Free
In a direct confrontation with the militia leader, Al-Shanai accused the Houthis of confiscating teachers’ salaries and turning them into subordinates, affirming that Yemenis are not slaves to anyone, and that the Yemeni people were born free in the land of faith and wisdom.
He condemned what he described as the humiliation of social figures and tribal leaders and the insult to their status, considering that the militia did not stop at starving people, but its practices, according to his accusations, extended to undermining their dignity and social standing.
Al-Shanai called for a “revolution of the hungry,” expressing his anger at the living conditions he described, affirming that hunger and oppression could no longer be tolerated.
“Kill Me in a Quarter of an Hour”.. A Word of Truth That Fears No Death
In a tone of defiance, Al-Shanai sent a direct message to Abdulmalik Al-Houthi saying: “I will not be silent for you, O Abdulmalik Al-Houthi, even if you kill me in a quarter of an hour or an hour, it is enough for me that I spoke a word of truth, and I am a free and honorable person.”
Al-Shanai criticized the militia leader’s appearance on screens, questioning in indignation about a ruler who manages people’s affairs from behind a screen while citizens suffer hunger and poverty.
He concluded his messages by affirming that he was ready to bear the consequences of his words, and that he would not back down from defending Yemenis, teachers, and the deprived, repeating that he would die only free and honorable.
Al-Shanai concluded in his recordings by revealing the tragedy of a man who sees his children hungry, and the women of his country searching for food in the garbage, and the dignity of his community being insulted, finding no recourse but his voice to confront fear and silence.
