In October of each year, social media platforms don a pink hue, and campaigns race to share images of pink ribbons, motivational messages, and stories of breast cancer survivors. Amid this momentum created by the trend, there is a need that is no less important than raising awareness about early detection: to approach the human experience of the disease and to talk about its details that may seem small in the eyes of some, but are significant in the life of the woman undergoing treatment.

Behind hospital appointments, test results, and treatment plans, stands a woman looking in the mirror, finding that her skin is no longer as it was, that her hair has begun to fall out, that her nails have changed, and that her features bear the marks of a journey she did not choose. Here, the question becomes deeper than beauty in its traditional sense: how do we maintain the quality of life and the woman’s sense of self while her body is fighting the battle of treatment?

When the disease leaves its marks on the skin

Breast cancer is not a disease confined to breast tissue; some of its signs appear on the skin, and its treatments cause various skin changes.

It is important to distinguish between signs that warrant evaluation for disease detection and changes that appear as side effects of treatment.

Redness of the breast skin, increased thickness, a dimpled appearance resembling orange peel, or new changes in the nipple deserve medical evaluation, especially if they appear suddenly or persist without a clear explanation. Inflammatory breast cancer, a rare but rapidly developing type, may present with redness, swelling, and warmth in the breast, without necessarily having a clear mass.

However, these symptoms do not necessarily indicate cancer, as they may result from other benign or inflammatory conditions. But the more important message is not to be reassured by the absence of a mass and not to delay medical evaluation when unusual changes occur.

During treatment, the skin may become drier and more sensitive, and itching, cracking, and pigmentation may appear, with nails being affected as well. Skin inflammation may occur in the area treated with radiation. These effects vary depending on the type of treatment, its dosage, and the body’s response to it; some chemotherapy, targeted, and hormonal treatments may affect the skin in different ways.

Here, the importance of dermatology as a partner in supportive care for cancer patients is highlighted, not merely as a specialty concerned with external appearance.

Hair… More than just falling strands

Perhaps hair loss is one of the most memorable side effects associated with chemotherapy, possibly because it is a visible effect that is hard to conceal, and it touches a deep aspect of a woman’s sense of femininity and identity.

But the scientific truth is that hair loss does not occur with all cancer treatments, nor to the same degree in all patients. Some chemotherapy drugs may lead to severe or complete hair loss, while others may cause thinning, changes in texture, or density. Some hormonal and targeted treatments may also cause hair thinning or changes in growth.

Importantly, hair loss resulting from chemotherapy is often temporary, with hair typically beginning to regrow after treatment ends, although its texture or color may differ initially. In less common cases, hair loss may persist for a long time or recovery may not be complete, depending on the type of treatment and other factors.

Thus, discussing hair is not a cosmetic luxury but part of the psychological preparation for treatment. Knowing what may happen and discussing available options in advance gives women a greater sense of control over the upcoming changes.

Trend of the Week

Deodorants and Breast Cancer… A Scientific Fact or a Persistent Myth?

Amid circulating fears and scientific facts, social media platforms repeatedly warn against using deodorants, especially those containing aluminum salts, claiming they may cause breast cancer or that using them after shaving the underarms increases the risk of the disease. But do these fears have scientific backing?

So far, there is no reliable scientific evidence proving a causal relationship between the use of deodorants or antiperspirants and the incidence of breast cancer. Studies have also not shown that shaving the underarms or using these products after shaving increases the risk of the disease.

One source of confusion lies in the mixing of deodorants, which reduce odors, and antiperspirants, which often reduce sweat secretion using aluminum salts. Questions have been raised about the ability of some of these ingredients to affect tissues, but the available evidence does not prove that they cause breast cancer when used in the usual manner.

In summary:

Not everything that spreads under the title “beware” is a medical fact. When it comes to breast cancer, what deserves attention is understanding the proven risk factors, adhering to appropriate early detection, and consulting a doctor when noticing any unusual changes in the breast, rather than fearing products that have not been proven to have a causal relationship with the disease.

Q&A

6 Questions That May Change Your Understanding of the Disease

Can a woman develop breast cancer without a palpable mass?

Yes. The disease may sometimes present with other changes, such as alterations in the shape or size of the breast, retraction of the nipple, or the appearance of bloody discharge from it, or skin changes resembling dimpling or an orange peel appearance. Symptoms may not appear in the early stages, so self-examination does not replace recommended imaging and early detection programs.

If there is no family history of the disease, am I safe from developing it?

No. A family history, especially among first-degree relatives, may increase the level of risk, but most breast cancer cases occur in women with no clear family history. Knowing the family history and assessing risk factors help determine the appropriate screening strategy.

Can wearing a bra or using deodorants lead to breast cancer?

There is no reliable scientific evidence proving that wearing a bra or the usual use of deodorants causes breast cancer. It is important to distinguish between circulating fears online and scientifically proven risk factors.

Does a biopsy mean that cancer has spread?

No. A biopsy is a diagnostic procedure aimed at examining a tissue sample and determining the nature of the changes present in it. It does not mean that the disease has spread, and necessary examinations should not be delayed due to this belief.

Does hair loss mean that cancer treatment is successful?

No. Hair loss may occur with some chemotherapy drugs, but it is not a measure of treatment effectiveness. Many cancer treatments do not cause hair loss in the same way, and the scalp may be affected to varying degrees depending on the type of drug and dosage.

How can a patient maintain healthy skin and reduce dryness and irritation during breast cancer treatment?

Some breast cancer treatments may lead to dry skin and increased sensitivity and irritation, making regular moisturizing an important part of supportive care during the treatment journey. It is recommended to use gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers and apply them regularly, especially after bathing, while avoiding very hot water and harsh cleansers. Using sunscreen is also preferred to protect the skin from UV rays, especially when sensitivity to the sun increases due to some treatments.
