Memory is not just a repository where a person keeps images of their childhood, names of people, places, and events they have experienced; it is one of the forces that shapes their identity and gives them a sense of continuous existence through time. We do not know ourselves solely by what we live in the present moment, but by what we can reach from our past, and by what remains in our consciousness from family, place, language, experiences, losses, and victories. If an individual needs their memory to know who they are, societies need their memory to know where they came from and how they became what they are.

For this reason, memory has gained a central place in modern thought. Paul Ricoeur, in his book “Memory, History, Forgetting,” recalls the Aristotelian conception that “memory is of the past.” This is a concise statement, but it places us before the essence of the matter; the event ends in its time, yet its effect can continue in the present through memory. However, Ricoeur also points out that the retrieval of the past is not a mechanical reproduction of what occurred; there is a difference between the past itself and its image that the self conjures, and from here memory intertwines with forgetting, imagination, testimony, and the writing of history.

Moreover, a person does not live their memory in isolation. Maurice Halbwachs established the concept of collective memory based on the idea that individuals remember within social frameworks. The home, family, neighborhood, school, city, language, and friends are not an external environment for memory; rather, they participate in its formation. A person may forget an old event, then return to their childhood home and recall it; or they may smell a food aroma that takes them back to their family table; or they may hear an old song that awakens a whole phase of their life. Thus, memory does not merely preserve the past in the mind, but distributes it among people, places, and things.

Jan Assmann develops this conception through the idea of cultural memory; society does not only pass on genes to its generations, but also stories, symbols, texts, rituals, holidays, places, and images. Through these media, the new generation learns something about experiences they did not live themselves. A child may remember, in a cultural sense, an old house they never lived in because they have heard its stories repeatedly, and they may feel a connection to events that preceded their birth because they have become part of the narrative that formed their identity.

Here, Nader Kazem’s perspective gains significant importance in his book “Uses of Memory” in a pluralistic society burdened by history; because he alerts us that memory is not an innocent repository of the past, but a use of the past in the present. The evocation of history and the use of its events occur within a circle of consciousness and will, and groups may carry different memories and narratives of the same event. Therefore, the question becomes more complex than simply “What do we remember?” to also include “Who remembers?” and “What do they choose to remember?” and “What do they forget?” and “Why does this event come to mind at this particular moment?”

The importance of these questions increases in the age of globalization; globalization does not only transfer goods, capital, and technologies, but also lifestyles, images, language, taste, and symbols at an unprecedented speed. It is enough to observe many cities today to notice the similarity of shopping centers, cafes, restaurants, clothing, music, and advertisements, even the vocabulary used by new generations. The danger does not lie in the communication between cultures; this communication has always been a source of cultural enrichment, but the danger lies when globalization turns into a unification of memory, so that the local narrative recedes before the global image, and the generation becomes more knowledgeable about the details of distant cultures than about the history of their neighborhood, city, and the names of the old places within it.

Modernity, in turn, carries a similar paradox. By its nature, it tends to move toward the new, to reconstruct cities, institutions, and lifestyles, which is part of the evolution of societies. But the question arises when building the new means completely erasing the old. When a historical house, an old market, or an entire neighborhood is demolished without documentation, we do not just lose a stone; we may lose a vessel of memory. Here, Halbwachs’ ideas appear very contemporary, in that place participates with the community in remembering itself. If all places disappear, future generations will have to remember their past without the markers that gave it a tangible existence.

This can be observed in today’s cities that have witnessed enormous urban and social transformations over just a few decades. The old house, the market, the sea, the diwaniya, traditional professions, and the names of neighborhoods and streets are not merely heritage terms to be displayed on occasions, but parts of a social memory that explain how people lived and how their relationships and transformations were formed. Preserving them does not mean rejecting the modern city, but preventing modernity from becoming a complete rupture with memory.

However, the greatest challenge may now appear in the digital age and artificial intelligence. For the first time in history, humans are capable of storing vast amounts of images, messages, documents, and recordings outside their personal memory. We photograph almost everything, and phones, platforms, and search engines store details that previous generations relied on memory, oral narrative, and paper documents to preserve. The paradox is that our capacity for storage has increased, while our need to remember may diminish.

Humans have come to know that they can return to their phones instead of memorizing, to search engines instead of retrieving, and to artificial intelligence instead of searching themselves among documents and texts. Here, a new kind of risk emerges: to possess a massive archive and a weak memory. The existence of millions of images does not mean we remember better; because memory is not just about storing information, but about giving it meaning and linking it to experience and identity.

Artificial intelligence amplifies the issue; it does not only store the past and retrieve it, but can also reshape, summarize, organize, and produce convincing images and texts about it. This is a significant cognitive ability, but it makes the critical question more urgent: Where did this narrative about the past come from? What sources did it rely on? What has been omitted or rearranged?

If future generations rely solely on digital answers, without referring to documents, testimonies, sources, and archives, history may gradually transform from a field of verification and critique into a collection of easily circulated narratives. Here, the danger of artificial intelligence intersects with Nader Kazem’s warning about the uses of memory; because the issue is not just about the existence of the past, but about who re-presents it, how it is presented, and for what purpose.

Nevertheless, the solution is not to resist technology, globalization, or modernity. Artificial intelligence itself can be an exceptional tool for preserving memory, through digitizing manuscripts and old newspapers, indexing archives, restoring images, recording oral history, linking scattered documents, and facilitating access to materials that were previously very difficult to consult. The difference lies in using technology to serve memory, not relinquishing the responsibility of memory entirely to it.

For this reason, the idea of useful memory that Nader Kazem discusses is significant in our present; memory is not a fixed, closed thing, but is subject to retrieval, interpretation, and redirection. What is required is not to live as prisoners of the past, nor to memorize every detail of it, but to build a critical relationship with it, to remember in order to understand, not to repeat conflicts; to preserve history in order to learn from it, not to turn it into a burden that prevents us from the future.

Ultimately, the most dangerous type of forgetting is not that a person forgets a name, date, or incident, but that the community loses the chain of meaning that connects its present with its past. When stories, places, and testimonies are lost, or when a quick digital summary replaces living memory, the past becomes more susceptible to reduction and reformation.

Therefore, protecting memory in the age of artificial intelligence is no longer a cultural luxury, but a cognitive and ethical responsibility. The question that humanity will face in the future may not be: “Can we preserve the past?” For we possess storage tools that no previous era has had, but the more difficult question will be: “What past will we preserve? Who will choose what we remember? And how can we ensure that the abundance of information does not turn into a new form of forgetting?”

Memory does not just preserve history; it preserves humanity within history. And if globalization, modernity, and technology push us rapidly toward the future, it is memory that ensures we do not reach it having forgotten the path we came from.
