The Yemeni Ministry of Public Health and Population warned today (Saturday) of an imminent health and humanitarian disaster in the city of Taiz due to the ongoing siege imposed by the Houthi militia and the obstruction of essential supplies, amid the near depletion of medicines, solutions, medical supplies, and fuel in the city’s health facilities.
The ministry stated in a statement that the continuation of this situation threatens the cessation of emergency services, surgical operations, intensive care, dialysis, and neonatal incubators, putting the lives of patients, injured individuals, pregnant women, and newborns at direct risk. It clarified that the Houthi siege threatens to deplete fuel, causing power generators, ambulances, and refrigeration chains for medicines and vaccines to fail, which could lead to serious complications and preventable deaths.
The ministry held the Houthi militia responsible for the siege and the obstruction of supplies and the resulting health and humanitarian repercussions, demanding the immediate lifting of the siege and the opening of supply routes, as well as ensuring safe passage for patients, ambulances, health personnel, and humanitarian aid.
The ministry called on the United Nations, humanitarian organizations, and health partners to take urgent action to deliver medicines, solutions, medical supplies, oxygen, and fuel to health facilities in the city of Taiz, in coordination with the ministry and the health office in the governorate, prioritizing life-saving services and ensuring the continued operation of facilities.
The ministry emphasized that protecting patients, facilities, and health workers and ensuring the delivery of medical supplies are humanitarian obligations that cannot be postponed, and that any delay in response increases the risk of service cessation and loss of lives.
This comes as local residents told “Okaz” that the Houthi militia prevents the entry of drinking water, as well as oil, gas, and food supplies, indicating that the situation is extremely dire amid a complete absence of all life necessities within the city, which the militia has completely closed off all roads leading to Aden.
The residents said: We do not even have enough to sustain ourselves with water, gas, flour, and other food supplies, and hospitals are suffering from a crisis, with dozens of patients unable to find treatment.
