Investigations by the Iraqi Integrity Commission have revealed manipulation in contracts of the Ministry of Transport and airports, suspected to be linked to financing armed groups outside the law, in a development that opens the door to uncovering financial networks believed to have exploited state institutions and their contracts to enhance their economic influence.
The Iraqi News Agency “WAA” reported today (Wednesday) from a knowledgeable source that the commission is currently auditing contracts of the Ministry of Transport and airports, noting that manipulation has been detected in several contracts in favor of what it described as “the economies of armed groups outside the law.”
In the same context, Al Arabiya channel reported from sources that the investigations relate to contracts in the transport and airport sector, suspected to be under the control of Iraqi Hezbollah, along with other files related to the party’s control over contracts in the Iraqi Military Industrial Commission.
These investigations come amid a wide-ranging anti-corruption campaign that has been ongoing in Iraq since last June, led by the Supreme Judicial Council in coordination with the government, and has included senior officials, current and former MPs, and political figures, following the revelation of extensive corruption files.
The investigations have resulted in the detection of cash amounts and assets that have been seized in connection with corruption cases, while the measures have expanded from pursuing specific files to tracking networks suspected of being involved in financial corruption and the appropriation of state institutions’ resources and capabilities.
The escalation of judicial pursuits comes alongside the announcement by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaydi to make combating corruption and recovering funds a priority for his government, emphasizing that the decision to confront corruption “is irreversible,” with a focus on enhancing financial oversight and pursuing looted funds.
