The Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaydi today (Monday) terminated the assignment of Hamid Al-Shatri from the presidency of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, without disclosing the reasons for the decision or announcing the name of who will permanently take over the presidency of the agency.
The official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported that Al-Zaydi decided to end Al-Shatri’s duties, while a document issued by the Prime Minister’s office indicated that the decision took effect as of October 26 of this month, based on a directive from Al-Zaydi to the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures to implement it.
The Iraqi authorities have not yet clarified the motives behind the termination of the assignment, nor have they announced a permanent successor to Al-Shatri in leading the agency.
Al-Shatri is considered one of the prominent security officials in Iraq, hailing from Dhi Qar Governorate in the south of the country. He has held several security and intelligence positions, including Director General of Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism at the Ministry of Interior in 2021, then the presidency of the Iraqi National Security Agency, before moving to the National Security Advisory in July 2023.
In December 2024, he was appointed by former Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ Al-Sudani to head the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, succeeding Raed Juhai.
