The Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to receive any phone call from his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing that Moscow does not reject talks with Kyiv.
In response to a question about the possibility of a phone call between the two presidents, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said, “I believe he will definitely respond, as Putin has never refused to hold talks,” according to the Interfax news agency.
It is worth noting that Putin and Zelensky have not met since December 2019.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov revealed Putin’s openness to dialogue, indicating that he has not yet received any call from Zelensky. However, Ukrainian officials believe that Moscow is trying to avoid a direct meeting between the two presidents through this proposal, considering that a phone conversation will not achieve tangible progress on contentious issues, especially regional matters and security guarantees, according to the Kyiv Independent newspaper.
Kyiv continues to demand a direct meeting between the two presidents, arguing that the more complex issues of the war cannot be resolved through a phone call or technical meetings alone. Zelensky stated that territorial issues should be discussed at the level of state leaders, emphasizing that the representatives of the negotiating delegations do not have the authority to make final decisions on them. Ukraine has rejected the idea of holding the meeting in Moscow, calling for it to take place in a neutral location.
Diplomatic efforts to reach a settlement for the war that has been ongoing since February 2022 are still ongoing, amid disagreements over the security arrangements that could ensure the stability of any potential agreement.
