كان الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب موفقاً ومحقاً حين طالب رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي بنيامين نتنياهو بالتصرف بـ«مسؤولية»، في شأن الالتزام بوقف النار في لبنان، تبعاً للتفاهمات الأمريكية الإيرانية، التي أسفرت عن توقيع «مذكرة تفاهم إسلام آباد» بين الولايات المتحدة وإيران. وهي ربما كانت توبيخاً دبلوماسياً قوياً لنتنياهو، الذي باتت احتمالات إعادة انتخاب كتلة ليكود التي يتزعمها في الانتخابات التشريعية التي ستُجرى خلال الأسابيع المقبلة ضعيفة. فقد شهد الأسبوع الماضي «أعنف» تصريحات أمريكية بحق إسرائيل، وصلت إلى حد قول نائب الرئيس الأمريكي جى دي فانس، إن إسرائيل لم يعد لها حليف يتعاطف معها سوى الولايات المتحدة؛ بل إن فانس اتهم إسرائيل بالتدخل في سياسات الإدارة الأمريكية. ويضاف هذا كله إلى اتهام قطاع عريض من الأمريكيين نتنياهو بدفع واشنطن إلى شن الحرب على إيران من دون مسوغات مقنعة.
ويمكن في هذا السياق فهم استمرار جيش نتنياهو في قصف لبنان بالمدفعية والمسيرات والغارات الجوية حتى بعدما أُعلن اتفاق إسلام آباد، ووقّع عليه الرئيسان الأمريكي والإيراني.
إن إسرائيل بقيادة نتنياهو لن تبالي حتى لو أبادت اللبنانيين كافة بدعوى ملاحقة حزب الله. وهي تدرك أن الاحتلال سيولّد مقاومة مضادة. وهو ما حدث عندما اضطرت إسرائيل الى الانسحاب من لبنان في عام 2000، بعد احتلال استمر 22 عاماً، أنشأت خلالها مليشيات موالية لها، أشهرها مليشيا سعد حداد وأنطوان لحد. وحتى لو لم يطلق حزب الله الإيراني اللبناني صاروخاً واحداً على إسرائيل فإن بقية الشعب اللبناني ستقاوم الاحتلال وتحرر لبنان من قبضة إسرائيل.
وفي الوقت نفسه تستمر حملات نتنياهو الوحشية ضد سكان قطاع غزة، مخلّفة عشرات القتلى والمصابين كل يوم، دون أدنى احترام لاتفاق وقف النار الذي وقّعه ترمب في اجتماع حاشد بالرؤساء والزعماء في منتجع شرم الشيخ المصري.
لقد أضحى نتنياهو مشكلة المنطقة والعالم. وإذا كان خلال سنوات رئاسته الطويلة خصماً مشاكساً للرئيسين الديموقراطيين بيل كلينتون وباراك أوباما، فها هو يكتسب عداوة الحزب الجمهوري الحليف التقليدي لإسرائيل. فقد تعامل بازدراء مع اتفاق شرم الشيخ. وها هو يتعامل باحتقار مع مذكرة تفاهم إسلام أباد، ما يؤكد أنه يريد استمرار الحرب حتى يُعاد انتخابه لرئاسة حكومة تحميه من محاكمة الفساد التي تهدده؛ بل يريد استمرار الحرب لتستمر معاناة دول الخليج من الاعتداءات الإيرانية، واستمرار إغلاق مضيق هرمز، الذي يهدد الاقتصاد العالمي، وإمدادات الوقود لدول العالم. لا بد من أن تتخذ واشنطن موقفاً صارماً يضع حداً لمغامرات نتنياهو العسكرية، ومناوراته السياسية الخبيثة. ولا بد من حماية الشعب اللبناني من العدوان الإسرائيلي.
President Donald Trump was successful and justified when he urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to act with “responsibility” regarding the commitment to ceasefire in Lebanon, following the American-Iranian understandings that resulted in the signing of the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” between the United States and Iran. This was perhaps a strong diplomatic rebuke to Netanyahu, whose chances of re-election for the Likud party he leads in the upcoming legislative elections have become weak. Last week witnessed the “harshest” American statements against Israel, reaching the point where U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said that Israel no longer has a sympathetic ally except for the United States; in fact, Vance accused Israel of interfering in U.S. administration policies. All of this adds to the accusations from a broad segment of Americans that Netanyahu is pushing Washington to wage war on Iran without convincing justifications.
In this context, one can understand Netanyahu’s army’s continued shelling of Lebanon with artillery, drones, and airstrikes even after the Islamabad Agreement was announced and signed by the American and Iranian presidents.
Israel, under Netanyahu’s leadership, would not care even if it exterminated all Lebanese under the pretext of pursuing Hezbollah. It knows that occupation will generate counter-resistance. This happened when Israel was forced to withdraw from Lebanon in 2000, after an occupation that lasted 22 years, during which it established militias loyal to it, the most famous of which were the militias of Saad Haddad and Antoine Lahad. Even if the Iranian-Lebanese Hezbollah did not launch a single rocket at Israel, the rest of the Lebanese people would resist the occupation and liberate Lebanon from Israel’s grip.
At the same time, Netanyahu’s brutal campaigns against the residents of the Gaza Strip continue, leaving dozens dead and injured every day, with no respect whatsoever for the ceasefire agreement that Trump signed at a large meeting with presidents and leaders in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El Sheikh.
Netanyahu has become a problem for the region and the world. If during his long presidency he was a troublesome adversary to the two Democratic presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, he is now gaining the animosity of the Republican Party, Israel’s traditional ally. He has treated the Sharm El Sheikh Agreement with disdain. Now he is treating the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding with contempt, confirming that he wants the war to continue until he is re-elected to a government that protects him from the corruption trial that threatens him; he even wants the war to continue so that the Gulf states continue to suffer from Iranian attacks, and so that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, which threatens the global economy and fuel supplies to the world’s countries. Washington must take a firm stance to put an end to Netanyahu’s military adventures and his malicious political maneuvers. The Lebanese people must be protected from Israeli aggression.
